Here we go: HB 1080 is up for debate on the House floor. #sdleg
Soye falsely states, "children as young as 8 years old are receiving cross-sex hormones after only one counseling session."
Soye states that "left to natural puberty, 80-90% will come to accept and thrive as their natural sex."

This is false.
Rep. Healy asks, "we heard in committee from adults who have transitioned and detransitioned in South Dakota. Why didn't we hear from anyone in South Dakota who transitioned as a minor and detransitioned?"
Rep. Healy points out that two of the detransitioners who testified in committee Tuesday were in Montana last week and are on a national speaking tour in state legislatures for bills like this.
Rep. Healy states that families will need to leave the state if this bill passes. Asks why we spend so much time on mental health in SD, but why don't we care about the mental health of trans youth?
"Gender affirming care reduces the rates of suicide and depression for trans youth."
"Medical decisions should be made by patients, their parents, and physicians, not by 105 legislators."
"Intentionally spreading false narratives to support a transphobic agenda is irresponsible and dangerous to trans youth."
Rep. May states "the medical field has gotten it wrong multiple times," comparing gender-affirming care to lobotomies.
Gender-affirming care is not comparable to a lobotomy, and stating that they are the same thing is transphobic and deeply hateful.
Rep. Wittman points to the litigation pending in other states. "This is the single most expensive piece of litigation happening in our nation."
"Think about SD taxpayers and how they will feel when we have to spend millions of dollars to defend this litigation."
Rep. Hansen states that Alliance Defending Freedom will represent SD for free if sued.
Rep. Hansen should know that the 8th circuit court already has precedent for this, and has more authority than Alliance Defending Freedom.
Rep. Duba says, "We're forgetting an important group of people in this conversation: the parents." "By passing this legislation, we are taking away parental rights, rights that a parent has with their child and medical professionals."
FWIW: HB 1080 violates the Due Process rights of parents guaranteed in the 14th amendment.
"Where does it end? This time we're talking about gender treatments. Next time will it be cardiac treatments or cancer treatments?" Rep. Duba
"It is not castration, it is not mutilation, and I am tired of listening to this on the floor of the House of Representatives of South Dakota." Rep. Duba.
Rep. Overweg: Children do not come up with this on their own.
That's right! Access to information and a rich variety of experiences help better inform children of who they are as they are growing up. Kids don't grow up in a vacuum.
Rep. Olson asks for specific numbers on how many procedures happen in South Dakota.
Rep. Soye does not have any specific data beyond what is reported in the media.
Rep. Olson asks: Without this law, is there anything stopping parents from telling their kids no?
Rep. Soye claims parents are coerced into this by healthcare providers.
Rep. Olson: We don't need a law to help parents to say no to their kids.
Deutsch: Yelling about Dr. Hansen performing procedures on 20 patients per year.

Dr. Hansen is not a surgeon, he does not perform surgeries.
Rep. Krohmer: States that Lupron was once considered "cruel and unusual punishment for sex offenders" ???
Rep. Schaefbauer: References one of MLK's speech, "It may be true that you can’t legislate integration, but you can legislate desegregation. It may be true that morality cannot be legislated, but behavior can be regulated..."
WOWOWOWOW the mental gymnastics here.
Rep. Nelson: "I take great offense from using MLKs words who fought for justice, peace, fairness, for marginalized people... to use his words to discriminate are reprehensible."
"Growing up as a young LGBTQ+ person was hard. Because society has created this perspective that I should not be here. That individuals who have been villainized because of who they are do not deserve the same space."
"How dare you sit on this floor today and tell these children that they don't know who they are? That you know better than them." Rep. Nelson
"We are asked to hide. We are asked to go back into the closet. We are asked to be anything other than who we are for your comfortability."
"I'm quite certain that perhaps a fair amount of you might have had mutilation called circumcision in this room? That's healthy tissue. Based on the decision of a parent, not an individual."
"I ask you find humanity within this space. I take great offense that this bill, which was paraded around the people's house by way of a press conference, for a bill introduction. That is fearmongering and that has no place in this state."
Rep. Nelson, "I'm here, I'm queer, and I'm not leaving Pierre."
Rep. Soye states that this law might bring people in to South Dakota because... we have more laws dictating what decisions parents can't make for their kids???
The House now votes.
HB 1080 passed 60-10.
