Top CEO’s are betting on nuclear in DENMARK 🇩🇰

Nuclear power has experienced a quantum leap in Denmark in the last two weeks!

The CEO of the @novonordiskfond and the CEO of @OrstedDK both believe that we cannot avoid nuclear power in Denmark.

A thread🧵
(1/12)
Last week, chairman of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Lars Rebien Sørensen, made it clear that we should reconsider our ”Nuclear Power No Thanks” in Denmark.

Today in the danish newspaper @berlingske he makes an even more profound claim follwing last weeks annonuncement.

(2/12)
Lars Rebien is chairman of the board of the world's third largest fund, which has more than 100 billion $ at its disposal.

He opens up the possibility that the fund can contribute to speeding up research and investments in nuclear power in Denmark.

(3/12)
To Berlingske he says
"We are building a safe and stable energy system in Denmark. In my opinion the excessive focus on offshore wind has some worrying and unfortunate effects, which could end up costing both consumers and Danish society immensely"

berlingske.dk/business/lars-…
(4/12)
Lars Rebien Sørensen also has his eyes on Sweden, where the Swedish government has announced that it plans to increase the production of nuclear power.

apnews.com/article/sweden…
(5/12)
He follows up with:
"What if an agreement was made with the Swedes that we would like to help finance the renovation of their nuclear plants, in return for us getting some more power. That way you build on something you know can work"

(6/12)
Lars also mention, which reactors he has in mind:
"But it is not impossible that within a time frame of ten years we have come further with some of the small modular reactors (SMR) of 300 megawatts, which are being developed at companies such as @gehnuclear"

(7/12)
Lars Rebien is being followed by Ørsted's CEO @NipperMads, who kind of supports Rebien in this announcement. Nipper goes so far as to announce that the state-owned @OrstedDK might want to invest in nuclear power in the future on Danish soil.

(8/12)
The announcements from two of Denmark's most influential CEO's testifies that a nuclear adventure is on its way. Denmark is otherwise known for being one of the absolute most staunch opponents of nuclear power in the world.

(9/12)
Denmark even have a parliamentary resolution from 1985 that excludes nuclear power from Danish energy planning. The announcements from the top CEO's are going to change the conversation in Denmark forever.

(10/12)
In recent years, we have seen the governing party Social Democrats almost ghost-likely stay away from the conversation.

This is no longer possible. The population will demand a debate in which everyone must participate. It is inevitable and just a matter of time.

(11/12)
Latest opion polls show that there are more supporters (46%) than oppenents (39%) to nuclear in Denmark.

If Denmark can change their view on nuclear power, then anyone can!

BREAKING: Next week, the Danish Parliament will vote to remove the ban on nuclear power.

Yes, the 1985 law that made it illegal to even investigate nuclear in Denmark could soon be history.

May 15 we will know.

A thread 🧵

For nearly 40 years, Denmark has banned nuclear power.

Not just building it, but also planning for it, even considering it in national energy policy.

This was never about science. It’s solely politics.

h/t to MP @SteffenFrolund for making this vote possible!

But things are changing.

Not only are we in a climate crisis. Europe is rearming. Energy security, industrial policy, and electrification are all back on the agenda

Even in 🇩🇪, where plants were shut down just few years ago, experts are now openly questioning the phase-out.

Just in: The Danish Prime Minister is open to nuclear energy in Denmark 🇩🇰

A serious conversation about removing the ban on nuclear energy is now happening at the highest levels of Danish politics.

Let’s goooooo!
1/3 Image
Today in Danish parliament, the Prime Minister (@Statsmin) was asked about lifting the ban on nuclear energy.

To this she answered:
“Yes, I think we should look at it with open eyes. It’s better that we have nuclear power in Europe than that we are dependent on Russian gas.”

This means that all three governing parties are now opening to relax the ban on nuclear energy in Denmark.

This is historical 😱

💡IEA: Nuclear is cheaper than solar or wind + storage in the EU in 2040

In its latest report the @IEA shows that new nuclear in EU in 2040 is more cost-effective than solar or onshore wind paired with 8-hour batteries, when compared at the same discount rate (WACC)

A 🧵
1/5 Image
On p. 53, the numbers are clear: At a 4% discount rate, both traditional nuclear and SMRs come out cheaper or equal to solar PV or wind + battery storage.

And remember this doesn’t even include the additional grid costs that renewables impose.

2/5iea.org/reports/the-pa…
Yet too often, nuclear is portrayed as too expensive, partly because of how people interpret IEA’s VALCOE metric. This table on p. 333 in the IEA's "World Energy Outlook" 2024 is often being used. But the discount rate (WACC) is different. 4% for Wind and Solar. 8% for nuclear.

On this day, 40 years ago, Denmark banned nuclear power over vibes

Since then 🇩🇰
🏭 Burned coal for decades
❌ Helped shut down reactors abroad
🤫 Quietly imported nuclear
🤥 Became a climate hypocrite

This is the story of one of the most self-defeating energy policies
A 🧵
1/9 Image
It was a Friday. March 29, 1985, Danish politicians gave in to fear and misinformation

Led by the Social Democrats (@Spolitik), supported by the Socialist People’s Party (@SFpolitik)

They banned nuclear power entirely.
The anti-nuclear movement had won.
But the climate lost
2/9 Image
With nuclear off the table, Denmark burned coal.
Then more coal.
Then natural gas and biomass.

For decades, Denmark’s grid was dirtier than almost any of its neighbors. Even one of the dirtiest in the EU.

Still is.

The Final Nail in the Coffin?
Danish Energy Politics in Ruins 🇩🇰

Today, The Danish government has cancelled the second half of the offshore wind tender in Denmark.

To make matters worse, The Energy Island at Bornholm has officially been put on hold indefinitely.

A thread
1/5 Image
Last year, the first half of the offshore wind tender flopped - not a single company placed a bid to build offshore wind in Denmark.

Now, the government has cancelled the second half of the tender, as the industry has shown no interest at all.
2/5
The Danish climate minister Lars Aagaard, is now calling for state subsidies to support offshore wind in Denmark.

This comes despite years of government promises that offshore wind would operate on market terms without public funding.
