Specifically because so many people hold this perspective, fascists have learned that they can cause harm, abuse, and death to millions of trans people, so long as they don't literally have a clearly labeled "TRANS GENOCIDE CAMP" and aren't filmed with chained people in stripes.
One group, maybe half a dozen, were found to have been placed in an evangelical adoption system, their rights signed away by parents who didn't know what they were signing, and they promptly vanished with no trail.
Modern-day fascists have mastered the art of utilizing the current overflow of information and worries the average person receives, to leverage the single greatest power the disaffected person offered them:
You are seeking a reason not to care.
Often, most any reason will do.
The people who have built a cult behind the most significant manipulator of perception, a man capable of leading "patriots" in a charged attack against the very heart of the democracy they claim to love more than anyone else, enabled a cause by finding weak excuses to justify it.
Disaffected moderates like to believe they are "above it all,” that they're not manipulated so easily as people chugging horse medicine, shooting themselves during their own armed protest, or marching for things that will never affect them.
But they grant more power than anyone.
All it takes to enable thousands of children to be ripped from their parents, who have fled violence your own nation initiated, who came on the promise of a peaceful life, is to decide that their removal from their people and indoctrination into supremacy isn't "actual genocide."
All it takes to enable racism for generations to come, is to nod and say "yeah, he looked like a hooligan," or "if you comply you'll be safe," or "I don't care what they do, if you don't completely design and explain an alternative I won't acknowledge it's an untenable problem!!"
"I have 'reasonable concerns' I could solve with a Google search" becomes "just segregate into your own spaces" becomes "there's still some states you can flee to if you can afford it" becomes "you can still get it out of pocket" becomes "the law wasn't written to arrest YOU..."
That's not theoretical. The last one is an active bill in many states, including my own. In Florida, they're already filing felony charges. In Texas, they're already sending CPS on trans parents and discussing how to do "border checks" to arrest fleeing trans people.
It's here.
The single most highly effective thing you can do to practically GUARANTEE the ongoing, documented, called-out rise of fascism in the West, is to continue to find reasons why it's not a problem and you don't have to worry about it.
Including chiding a marginalized group on tone.
OP was already informed to educate themselves.
I felt it important to explain why.
What will make this a fascist nation, like each one before, is not the efforts of fascists.
It will be the ongoing, active efforts by "ordinary people" to accommodate them.
To not be bothered.
That accommodation is supremacy.
It is what will cause supremacy to win, more than any effort actual fascists make.
A.R.Moxon explained this better than I can, and provides a clear visible example within living history.
The equality argument is that, however I purpose them, I cannot discriminate by protected qualities (including gender) without due cause.
The anti-trans argument is that the state must FORCE me to segregate trans people by birth sex.
One person has the "right" to dictate the terms of the bathrooms: the owner.
One person's right is being taken away by either of the two arguments: the owner, by the anti-trans proposal.
"Rights" are the ability to act - or refuse to act - without state-sanctioned repercussion.
The reason authoritarians' demand for state power to force businesses and organizations to inherently discriminate by a protected quality is being called a "right" is remarkably simple:
What is sought is immunity to the repercussions of hateful marginalization. Nothing more.
What separates trans activism from anti-trans activism is that the message of trans rights can be summed up as "leave us alone" and the message of anti-trans activism has been repeatedly summarized by those spreading it as "no trans people, and anyone who objects is annihilated."
I see a lot of "don't debate fascists, it never works," and as someone who simultaneously engages more than she should, and someone in a state where I'm about to be outlawed, I have to ask:
How well is letting them dominate the space *without* response working out for any of us?
There are great tips for countering disinformation: not engaging in their terms, not letting them drag you down into the mud, not accepting their framing on literally anything, and not trying to convince them, only show their falsehood to others.
"Let them own the stage" isn't.
The idea behind not debating random faceless trolls is that your interaction lends them an authority and relevance they didn't have. It makes the subject up for debate.
The top anti-trans activists in that room are absurdly beyond that measure.
In "Irreversible Damage," Abigail Shrier describes how cults frame outsiders as strictly allies or enemies, then tells the reader that people outside GC thinking are the enemy.
KJK says patriarchy uses women to harm women, then threatens women against her patriarchy-fed agenda.
Gender-critical activists are the only people attacking anyone in bathrooms.
They're the only ones advocating for prisoners to be put in harm's way.
They're the only ones erasing other people's lives with their words.
If it weren't for projection, they'd have nothing to say.
The pursuit of "respectability politics" means a literal threat of obliteration (political or otherwise) by the most self-aggrandized spokesperson will be given less attention and concern than a single trans protestor telling people who are seeking their death to "suck my dick."
Masculinity is 100% positive in its best forms: protection without hostility, guidance without dominance, strength that lifts up emotional expression instead of suppressing it, camaraderie without tribalism.
I call the other form "fragile masculinity" because that's its flaw.
I haven't really run into a trans masc yet who wasn't displaying all of the qualities of masculinity that I pulled from the fractured shards of an emotionally broken culture and did my best to emulate in the past.
My goal was: be Fred Rogers, until you need to be Optimus Prime.
And so many of you cis men have it figured out as well.
Historically, I find it tends to be the understanding of injustice and the need for emotional availability that enables true masculine strength, as well as a deep desire to show the best side of you to everyone you meet.
Ever notice, the only people caught for illegal voting are Republicans who did it to prove how easy they think it is to cheat the system and not get caught?!
A system that specifically, historically errs on the side of *denying* marginalized people their innate rights therein?
Ever notice anti-trans people claim trans care can be handed out in a walk-in visit, that companies pay bounties to hire trans people, that the gears of power turn at trans people's beck and call...
Only for trans people to ask where they can find such a fairy-tale reality?!
Now, more than ever, anti-trans activists reveal their intentions:
Someone *deserves* to be hurt.
They *deserve* to hurt someone.
If they cannot hurt the people of their choosing, they will hurt everyone who permits those designated targets the slightest chance to live freely.
