In 1938 PM Neville Chamberlain🇬🇧 (knowing war was imminent) returned the Treaty Ports (Lough Swilly, Spike Island & Berehaven) to Éire🇮🇪 unconditionally & ended the Anglo-Irish Trade War for £10M. The Ports were poorly maintained difficult to defend & needed a massive investment.
In return Chamberlain placated the powerful Irish-American🇮🇪🇺🇸 lobby, which allowed Britain🇬🇧 appeal for US help when WW2 started, allowed Irish beef exports to Britain recommence (0 tons 1938 to 16K tons 1941) & saved on the huge investment needed for the Ports & Army/RAF bases.
When WW2 started de Valera🇮🇪 promised every support short of war, giving the British🇬🇧 7 oil tankers (150M long) for free, allowing them base a plane at Foynes to check the coast & confirm no U-boats present, air/sea rescue boats in Cobh/Killybegs & access to coast watch reports.
The British🇬🇧 also had access to weather reports (crucial for D-Day), wireless stations at Malin Head & Valentina Island, submarine cables, Donegal Corridor, Foynes seaplanes for trans-Atlantic flights, Rineanna & Coast Patrol broadcasts of German incursions in Irish🇮🇪 airspace.
There was full cooperation between G2🇮🇪 (Irish Military Intelligence), MI5🇬🇧 & the OSS (CIA)🇺🇸. German spies were arrested quickly & phone tapping & postal censorship was widespread. 1,130 Republicans were interned without trial, 800 jailed, 5 executed & 2 died on hunger strike.
All US🇺🇸 air crews that came down in Éire🇮🇪 were repatriated 225 other Allied airmen were let go & 46 were interned for a time. All German flying crew & sailors were interned for the war while Allied seamen were released. Crashed planes were loaded on trucks & sent to the border.
Plan W was prepared for a possible German invasion of Éire🇮🇪 with 🇬🇧 armaments to help defend Irish ports & airfields especially Foynes (Fort Shannon) & Éire🇮🇪 was also to be the ‘Last Redoubt’ in case Britain was invaded with Rathduff aerodrome for the RAF to continue the fight.
The British Chiefs of Staff🇬🇧 agreed with the return of the Irish Ports unconditionally in 1938 & stopped Churchill in 1943 from requesting their use, as they knew they would only be a liability. Hubert Gough🇬🇧 also noted that 160K soldiers gave an Éire🇮🇪 address for next-of-kin.
Then Churchill🇬🇧 & Roosevelt🇺🇸 deliberately discredited de Valera🇮🇪 by distorting the true benevolence of Irish neutrality in order to undermine the influence of the Irish-American🇮🇪🇺🇸 lobby (who they feared) & their ability to make Irish Partition a post war international issue.
Churchill & Roosevelt also essentially abandoned the Roman Catholic people of Northern Ireland by supporting a bigoted regime that trampled on their rights & when the Troubles erupted it was partly a consequence of the distorted ignorance of what really happened in Éire🇮🇪 in WW2.
Just so that you are aware of the legacy left by Churchill & Roosevelt, this is from a typical US history book. I am sure a British one would be even more complimentary! It’s now time for the Irish-American🇮🇪🇺🇸 lobby to respond & reveal what REALLY happened in Éire🇮🇪 during WW2.

So the $50K question is why would you complete an aerodrome this large at Rineanna🇮🇪 in 1943 during WW2 with 4 concrete runway’s, accommodation for 100+ personnel, bunker’s, pillboxes, tunnel’s, Fort Shannon for protection & 1,000’s of 🇮🇪soldiers nearby, for 4 🇮🇪Air Corps planes? Image
The Air Base at Rineanna🇮🇪 included a 3 Bay Hanger, a C/Officer's house, a Terminal building, Control Tower, Barracks/huts, Canteen Hall, Church, Pub & Garda Barracks surrounded by barbed wire & pillboxes. The longest runway 5,280 ft & the marine basin could hold 15 flying-boats. Image
In effect Rineanna became a US Airforce Base🇺🇸 for repairs & refuelling, a vital link for British🇬🇧 VIP’s from the UK in transit to Foynes for transatlantic & North African flights & a base for the Irish Air Corps🇮🇪 Coastal Patrols. Information on maps given to US pilots🇺🇸 below. Image

In Feb 1945 Cranborne the British Dominion Secretary🇬🇧 advised the Cabinet “Although the S Ireland (Éire🇮🇪) Government has in fact helped us in a number of unobtrusive ways (lists 14) & entitled to stay out (of WW2) if she thought right" he was determined to block her UN🇺🇳 entry. Image
1. They agreed to our use of Lough Foyle🇮🇪 for 🇬🇧naval & air purposes. The ownership is disputed but the Southern Irish🇮🇪 authorities are tacitly not pressing their claim in the present conditions & are also ignoring any flying by our aircraft over the Donegal shore of the Lough. Image
2. They agreed to the use by our aircraft based on Lough Erne of a corridor over S Irish territory for the purpose of flying out to the Atlantic. 3. They arranged for the immediate transmission to the UK of reports of submarine activity received from their coast watching service. Image

After the fall of France🇫🇷 Foynes Flying-Boat Base🇮🇪 became a vital Military Air-Base. From Sept 1942-Dec 1943 alone, 2,065 US🇺🇸 Army & Navy, 409 British🇬🇧 War Office, 909 British Air Ministry & 300 British Admiralty top brass with 'civil servant' passports passed through Foynes. Image
This is the schedule at Foynes🇮🇪 for just 2 weeks in Sept 1943. Poole Harbour🇬🇧 was the RAF🇬🇧 seaplane base in Dorset. Botwood Newfounderland🇨🇦 was the Royal Canadian Air Force base🇨🇦. The US Navy Boeing 314 Clippers🇺🇸 were flown by US Navy pilots🇺🇸 & all planes were camouflaged. Image
From 1941-45 approximately 48K passengers Allied🇺🇸🇬🇧 military & Diplomats flew through Foynes🇮🇪 with tons of vital cargo (especially Penicillin) & mail. It was effectively a military base run by the USN🇺🇸 & the Royal Navy🇬🇧/BOAC, which had 38 planes in/out of Foynes. Image

The Irish Air Corps Reconnaissance & Medium Bomber Squadron🇮🇪 estd.1937, flew 9 Avro Anson's. The Fighter Squadron🇮🇪 ‘Small But Fierce' estd.1939, flew 4 Gloster Gladiator's & 6 Westland Lysander's. The Coastal Patrol Squadron🇮🇪 estd.1939, flew 3 Supermarine Walruses. Image
In 1939 3 Ansons & 2 Walruses relocated from Baldonnel to Rineanna (Shannon Airport) with a handful of pilots & ground personnel. Facilities were primitive; no hangars, no direction-finding station & no wireless. For major maintenance/repairs, aircraft had to return to Baldonnel. Image
Patrols began in Sept 1939 searching the inlets from Donegal to Wexford for German submarines/vessels & aircraft, survivors of sinkings & reporting details of incoming weather. By April 1940 only 3 Ansons were serviceable, by June they returned to Baldonnel & 2 Walruses remained. Image

This is an amazing article that outlines a huge amount of Anglo-Irish 🇬🇧🇮🇪cooperation during WW2, including armaments, wireless equipment, radar systems, transmitters, anti-aircraft defences, Coastal Patrols, Hurricanes, postal censorship & Fort Shannon. researchgate.net/publication/27… Image
In 1941 Britain🇬🇧 supplied Éire🇮🇪 with 12 3.7"anti-aircraft guns, 4 18-pounders, 12 75mm guns & trailers, 100K grenades, 250K rounds 303 ammo, demolition explosives & armor plating. The British🇬🇧 viewed these supplies to neutral Ireland🇮🇪 as essential & strategically beneficial. Image
When the British🇬🇧 suggested that certain transmitters could act as navigational beacons for German bombers the Irish🇮🇪 altered the frequencies. Britain provided wireless equipment & in anticipation of a possible German landing made plans for the supply of 6 mobile radar systems. Image
