In 1938 PM Neville Chamberlain🇬🇧 (knowing war was imminent) returned the Treaty Ports (Lough Swilly, Spike Island & Berehaven) to Éire🇮🇪 unconditionally & ended the Anglo-Irish Trade War for £10M. The Ports were poorly maintained difficult to defend & needed a massive investment.
In return Chamberlain placated the powerful Irish-American🇮🇪🇺🇸 lobby, which allowed Britain🇬🇧 appeal for US help when WW2 started, allowed Irish beef exports to Britain recommence (0 tons 1938 to 16K tons 1941) & saved on the huge investment needed for the Ports & Army/RAF bases.
When WW2 started de Valera🇮🇪 promised every support short of war, giving the British🇬🇧 7 oil tankers (150M long) for free, allowing them base a plane at Foynes to check the coast & confirm no U-boats present, air/sea rescue boats in Cobh/Killybegs & access to coast watch reports.
The British🇬🇧 also had access to weather reports (crucial for D-Day), wireless stations at Malin Head & Valentina Island, submarine cables, Donegal Corridor, Foynes seaplanes for trans-Atlantic flights, Rineanna & Coast Patrol broadcasts of German incursions in Irish🇮🇪 airspace.
There was full cooperation between G2🇮🇪 (Irish Military Intelligence), MI5🇬🇧 & the OSS (CIA)🇺🇸. German spies were arrested quickly & phone tapping & postal censorship was widespread. 1,130 Republicans were interned without trial, 800 jailed, 5 executed & 2 died on hunger strike.
All US🇺🇸 air crews that came down in Éire🇮🇪 were repatriated 225 other Allied airmen were let go & 46 were interned for a time. All German flying crew & sailors were interned for the war while Allied seamen were released. Crashed planes were loaded on trucks & sent to the border.
Plan W was prepared for a possible German invasion of Éire🇮🇪 with 🇬🇧 armaments to help defend Irish ports & airfields especially Foynes (Fort Shannon) & Éire🇮🇪 was also to be the ‘Last Redoubt’ in case Britain was invaded with Rathduff aerodrome for the RAF to continue the fight.
The British Chiefs of Staff🇬🇧 agreed with the return of the Irish Ports unconditionally in 1938 & stopped Churchill in 1943 from requesting their use, as they knew they would only be a liability. Hubert Gough🇬🇧 also noted that 160K soldiers gave an Éire🇮🇪 address for next-of-kin.
Then Churchill🇬🇧 & Roosevelt🇺🇸 deliberately discredited de Valera🇮🇪 by distorting the true benevolence of Irish neutrality in order to undermine the influence of the Irish-American🇮🇪🇺🇸 lobby (who they feared) & their ability to make Irish Partition a post war international issue.
Churchill & Roosevelt also essentially abandoned the Roman Catholic people of Northern Ireland by supporting a bigoted regime that trampled on their rights & when the Troubles erupted it was partly a consequence of the distorted ignorance of what really happened in Éire🇮🇪 in WW2.
Just so that you are aware of the legacy left by Churchill & Roosevelt, this is from a typical US history book. I am sure a British one would be even more complimentary! It’s now time for the Irish-American🇮🇪🇺🇸 lobby to respond & reveal what REALLY happened in Éire🇮🇪 during WW2.

After 8 weeks +4M views revealing the huge contribution from Éire🇮🇪 to the Allies in WW2 & exposing the myths as lies, it’s time to remember the Irish🇮🇪men & women that participated in nearly every war/battle worth fighting in & for every cause/country worth dying for. Thank you.
No 1 Contribution to the Allies: In WW2 48K mainly Allied military & diplomats flew through Foynes Co Limerick Éire🇮🇪 (& cargo & mail) run by USN & RN. Long-range Airbases were the real strategic facilities the Allies needed in WW2 & they got one from Europe to the US & N Africa.
No 2 Contribution by Éire🇮🇪 to UK/US: Rineanna Aerodrome was a vital link for UK VIPs to get to Foynes (en-route to USA, Portugal & N Africa). It was also a Irish Air Corps Coastal Patrol Base & USAAF refuel & repair Base for planes in trouble, coming from the US or North Africa.
The tragic story of the 3 Sheehan brothers from Fermoy Co Cork Éire🇮🇪& Vancouver, W/O Harry KIA on a Lancaster 13th May 1943, F/Sgt Frank KIA on a Lancaster 2nd Oct 1943 & F/Sgt Edward KIA on a Halifax 28th April 1944 all with the Royal Canadian Air Force. irishamericancivilwar.com/2017/11/12/cos…
Warrant Officer Harry Sheehan, RCAF, Wireless Operator aged 24, was KIA when his Lancaster Bomber was shot down on a raid over Duisburg Germany by a Luftwaffe nightfighter on the 13th May 1943. Buried in Gendringen RC Cemetery Holland.
Flight Sgt Frank Sheehan, RCAF, Air Gunner on a Lancaster Bomber aged 26, was KIA on a sortie over Munich on the 2nd Oct 1943. Listed as missing presumed dead. His grave was found in Durnbach War Cemetery Bavaria in Germany in 1948.
Excellent article by Ryle Dwyer. irishexaminer.com/opinion/commen… The real threat to Ireland was not from naval but from aerial attack & the development of long-range transatlantic airpower was understood in Ireland through Seán Lemass’ vision for Eire🇮🇪 as hub in transatlantic aviation.
In the new world of long-range airpower, the Treaty Ports under the control of care & maintenance parties, were from a bygone age, long before they were handed to Eire🇮🇪 in 1938. Airbases were the real strategic facilities the Allies needed & they got them at Foynes & Rineanna.
Rineanna🇮🇪 was essentially a USAAF base as the war progressed & a shuttle service from Bristol & Bournemouth using Douglas DC-3s, Armstrong Whitworth Whitley's (below), Lockheed Hudson's & the de Havilland Albatross, bringing VIP's to the Atlantic Flying-Boat service at Foynes🇮🇪.
These are the positions of the Radio Stations at Rineanna Aerodrome (Shannon Airport) & Foynes Flying Boat base in July 1939. Regular weather reports to the UK & reports from the Coastal Patrols on incursions into Irish airspace, were invaluable during WW2.
Another map from 1938.
In this current map, the location of Fort Shannon, built to protect Foynes & Rinneanna with British support & guns, is where the car ferry logo is opposite Killimer!
Visited Shannon Aviation Museum today! During WW2 Rineanna became effectively a US Airforce Base, was a link for VIP’s from the UK in transit to Foynes & the base for the Irish Air Corps Coastal Patrols. Protected by bunkers & 1000’s of soldiers based at nearby Dromoland Castle.
