Some mornings, I just can't. I don't have the patience to read the "news." Today, my special problem are stories that are written as though they are about someone or something but are actually about the media, the reporters writing them.
Examples include an NYT story today saying that @VP is "struggling" to define herself--when what she is struggling against is unfair coverage and false narratives about her that are perpetuated by the media itself.
We also have a WaPo story saying Americans don't believe Biden has gotten much done during his first 2 years in office. Since it's a provable fact he has gotten a historic amount done, this is actually a story about media failure written as though its about a Biden failure.
We also have multiple stories about the China balloon story impacts the president and/or US policy when a huge percentage of that story is media hype of an otherwise not terribly significant event. The formula is the same in each case.
The media creates a false or deceptive narrative then writes a story about the consequences of the narrative as though it played no part in creating the circumstances about which it was reporting. I have to believe we can do better.

I've seen some critiques of my Ukraine article over the weekend suggesting that providing more aid to that country is the equivalent of inviting all out war with Russia. Nonsense. Not just nonsense, but an argument repeatedly revealed by cold hard facts to be fallacious.
Think how often you read over the past year that if the US and NATO provided aid to Ukraine, javelins to Ukraine, long range missiles to Ukraine, intelligence to Ukraine, training to Ukraine, armored vehicles to Ukraine, tanks to Ukraine...it would mean war with Russia.
Russia warned of it, to be sure, because it was in their interest to deter the behavior. But it never turned into such a war, did it? In fact, by providing such weapons, not only was UKR protected against a brutal aggressor but Russia was revealed to be much weaker than expected.

Countering GOP efforts to blow up to the economy will require more than just using the Senate majority or presidential threats of vetos. This will be a communications war. The WH and Hill Dems need a strategy, effective spokespeople & a national alliance of orgs in support.
Right now the governors and mayors that are among the greatest strengths of the Democratic Party should be prepared for how to counter GOP efforts to block raising the debt ceiling, gut social programs, etc. There are going to be long periods of stand off and potential pain.
Dems can block GOP efforts...but they must also make it clear the damage the GOP is doing, the pain they are causing and intend to cause, that the crisis is entirely of the GOP's making. Their disinformation machine will be going full blast. Lies will, as usual be deployed.

And on the second anniversary of the attack on Congress, the Republican Party sought to make Speaker of the House the man who was first in the wake of the assault to publicly embrace the man most responsible for the coup.
And that man promised to elevate those who defended the coup and participated in the effort to steal the election. And he promised to investigate and punish those who investigated the attack on our democracy.
Those who died and were wounded in the Capitol that day, those who defended it on January 6, 2021 are therefore again seeing it and all it stands for desecrated on January 6, 2023. That, and not stories of Republican chaos, should be the focus of coverage today.

It's 2023. You probably want to know what is going to happen this year. You can count on the following:
--Donald Trump will be indicted
--The GOP leadership in the House (whoever that turns out to be) will whiff badly in their attempts at "investigations."
--The Supreme Court will continue to advance its hard right agenda and, as scandals around it deepen, will sink to new lows in the public's standing
--The Biden Administration's implementation agenda will be augmented by foreign policy progress & its approval ratings will benefit
--The narrative around @VP will change and appreciation for @KamalaHarris will grow as she is increasingly seen as Biden's heir apparent
--Dems will also see growing appreciation for their deep bench of excellent governors

Thinking that Twitter exists to be a free-for-all for all views including those that are extreme, dangerous, defamatory, misleading, or inflammatory misunderstands Twitter, its advertisers (such as they were) and its users.
Twitter has two forms of value added: its content and knitting together the community it serves. If the content is degraded by being infused with lies, hate, distortions and extremist vendettas, not only does it pose a liability for advertisers who might be seen to support it...
...but the content is also likely to erode the community which is the asset the advertisers (and the members of the community are seeking to reach.) Should the exchanges between community members become odious to them, they will depart.

@SpeakerPelosi is an historic figure in US politics of the first magnitude. Yes, she broke barriers as a woman. But just as significantly, she was the most consequential & productive Speaker of the modern era.
She is a brilliant, courageous and shrewd political leader.
More importantly, as all those who know her will attest, she is an extraordinary human being--warm, deeply devoted to her family and friends, a woman of great faith and a deeply sincere patriot. She will be missed.
That said, the Democratic Party has great bench depth, talented, proven leaders capable of following in her footsteps. The man most often mentioned to succeed her, @RepJeffries, would make an excellent Speaker of the House and a great spokesperson for the Democratic Party.
