the first time it happened, they were out with the team, not exactly drunk but not totally sober, either.

and because most of them were just teenagers stuffed into grown men's bodies, the conversation had inevitably turned to the stories of their first kisses.

now, atsumu was actually quite proud of his first kiss, so naturally he spilled all the unnecessary details to his rapt listeners (read: inunaki and hinata).

just as he was getting to the part where he stuck his tongue in suna's mouth, he suddenly felt a sharp poke on his hand.

make that two pokes. and...something dragging on his skin?

he looked down his other side just in time to see kiyoomi removing the point of a pen from the top of his hand.

and right there, in the dip between his index and middle fingers, was a mark that hadn't been there before.

atsumu stared at the little doodle, then up at kiyoomi, then back at the the doodle.

kiyoomi was still for a few seconds before he belatedly added another feature to his drawing.

atsumu's mind went a little blank, partly from the alcohol but mostly from the fact that his boyfriend just /drew/ on him and it was the cutest thing he'd ever seen, even if kiyoomi was angry for some reason.

(atsumu comes to learn that most people don't like to hear about their boyfriend sucking someone else's face).

after that, it became somewhat of a thing for them. kiyoomi always kept a pen on him in case he wanted to express his feelings to atsumu via elementary-grade drawings.

of course, they signed for important or specific things, but sometimes kiyoomi wanted to keep his thoughts more abstract, and atsumu found himself looking forward to the ticklish feeling of a pen running across his skin.

it was always shapes, never words.

sometimes a sun if he wanted to spend the day outside. sometimes a smiley face if it was a good day for his joints.

sometimes there was no meaning at all, just a smattering of random squiggles and lines.

sometimes atsumu just liked the contact, and kiyoomi just liked to remind him he was there.

it's a pretty average night, as far as thursday nights go.

they dragged their exhausted asses home from practice, took a shower together, and atsumu cooked them a simple dinner.

now they're cuddled up on the couch together, the nightly news playing in the background as atsumu runs one hand through kiyoomi's hair, humming softly because he knows kiyoomi likes his voice.

kiyoomi has his pen out and is currently working on covering the newly blank canvas of atsumu's hands. looks like tonight is a meaningless squiggle kind of night, which is just fine with him.

he thinks his hands always look too bare and lonely without any marks on them.

it's quiet, easy, relaxing - just existing in each other's company like this.

atsumu feels himself beginning to drift off to sleep when he notices that the pen on his skin has stopped moving.

he cracks an eye open to see kiyoomi staring intently at his hand. the pen is pressed in one spot, as if he began to draw something but couldn't bring himself to finish it.

he sees him swallow hard before slowly resuming the movement of the pen.

atsumu figures out what the shape is going to be before kiyoomi finishes, but he holds his breath anyways because he can't believe his eyes.

of all the things kiyoomi has drawn on him, he has never once drawn a heart before. well, until now.

because there it is, a tiny heart that looks a little wobbly, maybe because it's right on top of his thumb knuckle but also maybe because kiyoomi's hand was shaking.

"omi..." he murmurs, scared to believe it. they haven't told each other those words yet.

he certainly doesn't want today of all days to be the first time he misinterprets one of kiyoomi's doodles.

kiyoomi seems to know that atsumu is hesitant to assume his intentions, so he rolls his eyes and releases atsumu's hand to sign very clearly.

"i love you."

atsumu gets the message that time, and the small smile that breaks out on his face does nothing to express the overwhelming joy he feels in his heart, but kiyoomi knows it's a smile that's just for him.

"omi-omi-omi," he coos, tracing a fingertip along the outline of the heart. "i love you too. sooo much, baby. shoulda said it earlier but i'm an idiot."

kiyoomi gives a small smile back, one just for atsumu. he signs fondly. "my idiot."

atsumu hauls kiyoomi up onto his lap to hug him closer, their hearts beating rapidly but in tandem.

"that's right, i'm yers forever, you'll never be rid of me now."

when they kiss, it's soft, gentle, like everything is the same but different somehow.

because sometimes the loudest love is the kind that is felt, not spoken.

(and atsumu sure feels it when they go to the tattoo parlor the next day to get the little heart drawn on him permanently. it hurts like a bitch because "why did you draw it right over the bone, omiiiiii")
