We have enormous respect for @MargaretAtwood, but her comments on Bill C-11 as reported in the @globeandmail this weekend were misguided and uninformed. The Writers Guild of Canada fully supports the spirit and intent of #C11. (🧵 1/4)
To tell stories, audiovisual writers require access to investment and distribution platforms, which are increasingly controlled by giant foreign tech companies. #C11 seeks to advance longstanding 🇨🇦 cultural policy objectives by requiring these giants to support 🇨🇦 content. (2/4)
Comparisons of #C11 to the Soviet Union or the like, by Ms. Atwood + Senator David Richards, are completely inaccurate + harmful to their fellow 🇨🇦 creators. @WGCtweet has studied C11 closely. See our detailed FAQ on why we support the intent of C11: wgc.ca/node/355212 (3/4)
HOWEVER, #C11 still retains an incredibly troubling double-standard at s. 3(1)(f.1) that favours foreign online undertakings and risks 🇨🇦 culture and the livelihoods of 🇨🇦 creators. The government must correct this serious flaw so that #C11 can fulfill its promise. (4/4)
