You make most of your decisions based on fear.

This makes you anxious, worried, and scared.

But, there’s a solution…a better way:
Many of us ambitious, type-A people have succeeded by running on fear.

But at what cost?

Fear is motivating but also costly.

Instead, we can turn our energies toward something else…
Fear CAN be a powerful ally when we take it out of the subconscious and bring it into the foreground.

By looking at our fear, we can see what is important to us.

Fear tells us that something is at risk.

Rather than stopping there, we might ask ourselves:
What am I sensing is at risk?

or

What is important to me that I would like to attain or protect?

By moving towards what we would like, rather than avoiding an unwanted outcome, we can actually design a proactive path toward the end result we desire.
Bringing fear into our awareness holds the potential to disarm and unwire the fear.

In coaching, we often work with fear by inviting clients to write down the things they are afraid of.

This simple act of naming the fear can have a powerful effect.
The antidote to fear is love.

Imagine how much more effective you might be in your work or life if you came with love instead of fear.

How much more energy might you have?

How much more clarity?

This is not an overnight change. And it doesn’t have to be.
Even the beginning of change can have a profound effect on the present.

Begin today by writing down the things you are afraid of. Then note the things you sense are at risk.
Now ask yourself, if I came from a place of love and creativity, how might that change how I approach the things I define as important?

Close your eyes for a moment and offer yourself some compassion.

It is human to be afraid.

But don’t allow it to drive everything you do.

From age 19-49, read this:
1. Nothing is more detrimental to your mental health than being alone.

2. Above all else, prioritize your own mental and physical wellness.

3. Don’t work yourself to death for a job that would replace you tomorrow.
4. Explore your curiosities, you never know where they might take you.

5. Life is full of “failures,” Embrace them. Learn from them. Grow through them.

6. No one is paying as much attention to you as yourself.

20 years ago I tried out for the US Olympic sailing team.

I nearly lost my hands from the intense training.

This experience resulted in an outcome I never expected: Image
49er sailing (as shown in the image above) involves a high-performance and insanely demanding two-person boat.

I had been a sailor my whole life, racing competitively as a kid. So when I finished college, I felt called to return to the sport…
I knew to make the Olympic team, I would have to give it my all. So, I dropped everything and flew to Florida to train.

During my time in Miami, training every day, I suffered deep cuts to my hands that were continuously getting infected from the saltwater…

My own miscalculation of this one element is my greatest regret looking back on my time as a founder and CEO.

Having now coached 60+ CEOs on four continents, I know most other founders make the same mistake.

Let's make sure you don't. 🧵
I have been thinking a lot lately about the idea of living life on hold. That is how I would describe the way I lived for most of my years as a founder and CEO.
I hear it in conversations with many of the CEOs I meet: they are putting in the years now so that life will be different in the future. And when life is finally different, when they have more [money, accomplishment, impact, choices, etc.] then they will be ready to really live.
