Honestly? So far Biden is making common sense appeals to the folks at home and hammering home on the economy in a v plain way.

He’s making Republicans look like elitist snobs (which they are) and they’re falling into it. #SOTU

“No billionaire should be paying a lower tax rate than a teacher or a fire fighter.” YUP.

Meanwhile the republicans are going to war with teachers and unions. And behaving childishly during a speech during which he has been overly kind to them. #SOTU.

Shout out to those who’ve been pushing from the left on making the wealthy pay their fair share. Shaping policy is often a long game.

Spending this much time on the economy is v smart. Cause folks are v pissed about these $85 eggs!

I hope he is sure to point to VP harris’ leadership on relevant areas as this continues. It will be an important signal to those who clearly revel in public misogynoir.

I’m sure there will be places here I won’t agree/will wish he went further/will be disappointed by what was left out.

But so far, this is a politically savvy speech with some important economic pushes so far, and that can’t be denied.

(I didn’t read the copies that were available earlier-I genuinely like to watch live because it’s always different off the page and the delivery impacts the outcome, too.)

Teacher raises are critical AND it’s important for Dems to lead on it-because savvy Republicans are going to try to use teacher raises to disguise dangerous union busting, book banning and censorship, a la Ron DeSantis: #SOTU

The police training/more money for police ain’t working but I’m pretty sure y’all know how I feel about that.

But more money for community services being in there is pretty new.

Admittedly, my expectations aren’t high here considering that we started at “fund the police!” as a headline not so long ago

half-formed thoughts:
-republicans looked like petulant, elitist jerks tonight & I hope somebody is smart enough to hammer that home

-tricking them into standing up for SS was super savvy

-Kevin McCarthy couldn’t stand up for democracy bc the GOP would be mad. Don’t forget that

-“I will veto an national [abortion] ban” is good but it’s v simply not enough. They need to proactively pass protection for abortion access.

-I’m glad he’s promoting more $ for social services and hope it fully materializes. BUT alongside increased police funding ain’t it

-spending the bulk of this on the economy was simply v savvy. Making direct-to-camera appeals to “the people at home” was smart & where Biden is in the pocket.

-ending on Democracy (that McCarthy can’t applaud!) was smart. Because you look ridiculous not even pretending to agree

In the end, he I think he appealed to the folks he was clearly trying to appeal to.

One more thought:

I truly hope the parents of Tyre Nichols get some kind of rest for their spirits tonight, and that they aren’t forced to carry the burdens of our country’s sins and the guilt of politicians all day.

I am continually praying for them.
