Did you know that the construction of nearly 6,000 new purpose-built rental apartments at Sen̓áḵw (with 20% at below-market rents) is underway in Vancouver?
@SquamishNation leaders visited for a site tour day, and I recorded some updates for you:
Phase 1 of 4 has started with excavation for site preparation for infrastructure.
Phase 2 of 4 will start excavation sometime this year.
In addition to 20% of the units dedicated to below-market rents, these apartments will also become home to nearly 500 Squamish People at deeply affordable rents.
This will make Sen̓áḵw the 2nd largest @SquamishNation community.
The Squamish will be coming home.
Thank you to the team working to move this project forward!
The City of Vancouver is holding a Kits Point transportation information session on February 16 to learn more about changes proposed for the neighborhood: vancouver.ca/home-property-…

"If we don't have babies, the colonizers win" is an insight that doesn't consider trans women, trans men, non-binary, queer, and two-spirit Indigenous Peoples (and also leaves out some cis women).
Many Indigenous Peoples, like trans women, trans men, non-binary, queer, two-spirit, and some cis women, cannot or will not have biological children.
A problem we have is the belief that procreation is intrinsic to our Indigeneity.
It's also a challenge for Indigenous trans, non-binary, queer, and two-spirit Indigenous Peoples.
BREAKING: Squamish Nation demands immediate moratorium of old-growth logging in its territory squamish.net/old-growth/
On June 10, the Squamish Nation formally gave notice to the Province of B.C. to defer old-growth logging for two years in the Nation’s 690,000 hectares while the Nation develops long-term sustainability plans.
78,000 hectares of the Nation’s old-growth forest are at risk unless the Province immediately halts new clear cuts. These forests belong to the Squamish People and were never ceded.
The @jjhorgan government’s position on old growth is offensive and ignorant of what UNDRIP and Indigenous Rights really mean.
BC Government leaders and staffers are wrongly insinuating that people are "demanding government overrule titleholders" who "want to log old-growth in their territory".
This is an ignorant red herring argument to undermine free, prior, and informed consent.
Forests, rivers, and natural resources belong to Indigenous rights & titleholders and the government is allowing companies to keep extracting them while pretending to care about rights & titleholders.
On Missing Children and Burial Information, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission had six Calls-to-Action which have not yet been completed.
Here are the six:

records on the deaths of Aboriginal children in the

documents available to the National Centre for Truth

Did you know that today is the 97 year anniversary of the founding of the @SquamishNation?

On July 23rd, 2023, a majority of the adult males and the designated ’chiefs’ of several Squamish "Indian Bands’ signed a petition to the Federal government requesting all of the signed ’bands’ be amalgamated into a single ’Indian Band’ called the Squamish Nation.
As per Mathias v. Canada (2001), "Amalgamation was initiated and pursued by the Squamish People through a series of petitions and resolutions directed to the Department in the period from 1913 to 1923." ...
"Coast Salish" is an anthropologist & linguistic designation for a collection of Indigenous peoples who speak a language that is connected to the "Coast Salish" language family.
Think Romance languages with Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, etc.
There are twelve languages in our language family with dialects and language varients within those languages.
Our peoples, territories, and languages spread across a distance of around 400km from Seymour Narrows to Puget Sound
