I am 1 year post-op today! There's been lots of anti-trans misinfo in hearings, so let me clear the record trans vaginas by talking about my own:
I am not "mutilated," it is not an "open wound," and it is fully sensate, despite the best wishes of anti-trans folks.
Full 🧵
Yes, I dilate. At this point one year out it can best be described as "whenever I feel like it," but mostly once every 4-7 days. It doesn't even register as an inconvenience.
It can do nearly all the things cis vaginas can do. It gets wet. I have no problem peeing .
It is not "constantly trying to seal itself." People who went to my surgeon have at some point not dilated for a month. There's nothing to "seal" because it's all skin (and membrane, as there are histological changes within the post op vagina).
I have had sex, and it is quite enjoyable. I am capable of orgasm. Again, despite the best wishes of anti-trans witnesses.
I can wear my clothing without ever worrying about a bulge or about anything "giving me away." Locker rooms and bathrooms are not scary for me anymore.
I don't remember what my old equipment was like.
It is NOT "amputation." I did not "get it cut off." Much of the source material was used in the creation of my vagina.
Interestingly, some of the people that had problems referring to me as a woman who knew me from before were suddenly able to after my surgery. I know I am not the only trans person who has had this experience after speaking with others who had surgery.
Nothing has alleviated my dysphoria more than bottom surgery. I do not feel like I have to combat my body to live and exist as the woman I am.
It has changed my life so much for the better. I don't even remember what my old equipment was like.
I realize I did not mention aesthetics so let me mention that - I find it extremely beautiful on me. I have see other vaginas, trans and cis, and with the right surgeon, you cannot tell the difference aesthetically. I feel that way about my own.
This is a lifesaving surgery.
Also because people will ask:
Dr. Christine McGinn, New Hope Pennsylvania, was my surgeon. I chose her because she's a leader in the field with the lowest complication rates and very high levels of satisfaction from prior patients and good aesthetic results.
It seems like this thread is taking off, so for people following me, I write about trans life, legislation, and news and my newsletter is what allows me to stay in tune to all of this.
Jamie Reed is represented by Vernadette Broyles. If this name sounds familiar, it's because she has been in charge of nearly every major anti-trans court case involving schools in the United States, and advised DeSantis on the creation of the Don't Say Gay law.
We know that she worked with the Republican Attorney General of Missouri for over 2 weeks before releasing this story, and judging from how many right wing outlets seemed prepared to launch their stories the moment it dropped, this was a coordinated effort.
Speaking with @Esqueer_ , she pointed out that for low income folks, "loss of access is a reality" and that bans lead to people turning to other means to obtain their care.
I interviewed one trans teen in a red state with pending legislation who informed me about how he is working with medical providers to ensure he has enough supply to ride out potential bans.
Montana is about to vote on HB361, that would allow students the right to misgender their classmates...
Montana is going full speed ahead with targeting trans people this cycle.
"Having kids crying in the hallway after seeing this bill... I'm going to be a no."
"We talked about many people who go by names that were not given at birth, and there are many reasons that people don't do that. We even have representatives upstairs that don't. This creates a carve out around trans people and to me that's inherently discriminatory."
Happening now, Montana will be hearing an anti-drag bill that also targets trans people.
It defines drag as "exhibiting a gender identity opposite of what was assigned at birth using clothing and makeup while singing and dancing."
It bans it in public.

I work tirelessly covering these hearings. If you want to give back a little or even just make sure you are constantly up to date on anti-trans legislation, please subscribe at erininthemorn.substack.com.
I'll never stop covering this. Your help lets me do it.
You can watch along with me live here.
As a special treat, one of the representatives, Representative Zephyr, is my partner. I can think of no other person that I trust in a room with this bill than her.
"You know, if you're going to come before a committee and make misrepresentations and mischaracterizations, it's fair for us to questiony our medical background"
Matt Walsh tried to testify for Tennessee's gender affirming care ban today and got destroyed by Dems.
This is the first time he has testified for such a bill. I guess he thought his "big brain" (literally something that came up in his testimony) would carry the day.
He hurt his own cause.
They should hide Matt Walsh from ever appearing at one of these again.
He was so terrible and he is trying to save face so badly.
In minutes, Nebraska's Legislature is expected to hear the "Let Them Grow" act, an Orwellian named act that will ban gender affirming care for trans youth, which will result in an increase in suicides.
I will be covering live here. Please stick with me.
As always, please consider supporting my independent reporting and activism on these bills. I only can do this because of support from people like you.
