Many people ask me how to work with schools to implement #CorsiRosenthalBox es. I want to share a story about one small school in a rural community in Arizona that is doing it right. 1/
Our team was contacted by Red Rock Elementary in Red Rock, Arizona because they had concerns about their air quality and wanted to do something to reduce the number of kids who are missing school for illnesses. 2/
They wanted to learn more about the impact of IAQ on health and whether #CorsiRosenthalBox es might be a helpful addition to their school. They decided that they wanted to build a #CorsiRosenthalBox for every classroom. 3/
8th-grade gifted and talented students championed the project guided by their incredible teacher, Tiffany Massie. They integrated this work into the school curriculum learning about science, math, leadership, persuasive writing, public speaking, social justice, and teamwork. 4/
The kids hosted a women in STEM panel to teach them about indoor air quality and health (w/ a surprise appearance by @JimRosenthal4). Then they wrote letters, made videos, and created a community outreach and education plan to help fundraise. 5/
They borrowed an Aranet CO2 sensor and took readings around the school to get an idea of how well-ventilated their school is, measured the volume of each space, and used online calculators to figure out how many boxes to build. 6/
Once they raised the money, the 8th graders presented the project to every classroom in the school to create buy-in. Then they organized a school-wide build event where every class came to the library to learn how to build their box. 7/
Each class decorated their newly built box and the students hosted a school-wide decorating contest. Just look at these amazing #CorsiRosenthalBox es. @CorsIAQ 8/
We plugged the boxes in and our junior scientists watched the PM2.5 concentrations go down in real time! Thanks, @quant_aq 9/
These students will be studying the impact of the boxes in their school for the rest of the school year (energy use, waste, effectiveness) and even have a poster accepted at an upcoming scientific conference (@azpha)! 10/
And they are committed to making this a sustainable health intervention. Every fall, the new classes will come in and change the filters and come up with a new decoration. We are so proud of their success! 11/

This serosurvey was the hardest project (scientifically, logistically, and emotionally) that I have ever done in my academic career. 2/n
We know that traditional public health reporting undercounts COVID-19 cases for many reasons (disparities in access to testing and health care, asymptomatic infections, etc.). 3/n
Many people are asking why we decided to take on the #corsirosenthalbox DIY air filtration project for AZ schools.
Kids are returning to school in the middle of a perfect storm- we have an unprecedented Omicron surge, RSV and flu are circulating, many districts have dropped mask requirements, and kids are under-vaccinated and remain at risk.
This pandemic has caused so many disruptions to childrens' routines and learning and I’m worried about Omicron causing even more disruptions through unmitigated spread.
