Cool schematic (by Doug Drexler) of the warp reactors originally designed for the aborted 70s Trek TV show (Phase II) which was upgraded to The Motion Picture. (Read on for how they evolved!) Image
The reactors (possibly inspired by real fusion reactors) can be seen here in concept art by Mike Minor, who was in the art department headed by Joe Jennings. Image
