@independent_ie @BuckoConor...a long thread .. for the record...point of Info. 1946 no legal adoption papers available for Mixed Race Irish ...neither for biological mother to sign ...nor for sisters or nuns to forge etc.
Christine received her 1946 files from Religious Sisters of Charity in 2011. Both documents from 1946 and 2011 indicated that legal adoption of mixed race children not an option...
Also point of info... adoption not legally possible in 1950s for any child "commited via children's court" (Dublin Castle) to any "orphanage" or "industrial school" or "convent" etc.
Parents of committed or detained child had no parental rights to remove their child from any convent or any place of "detention" . See 'Evelyn' based on true court case 1955 re. Parental rights and children's rights of innocent incarcerated with religious institutions of abuse.
Another true example ...my maternal grandmother who insists that her son was taken from her a couple of years before Christine was born in London...when she insists that she brought Sols. To door of Letterfrack ...
for return of her son. Christian Brothers told my maternal grandmother to her face that she had no rights to her son and that her son had no rights... then they slammed the door of Letterfrack in her face...
Neighbours and relations remember my grandmother's fight to get her son back...but she was repeatedly told she had no rights as a mother...
Similar true events happened in Glin "industrial sch" & "reformatory" Limerick with various generations of relatives calling to door of Christian Brothers asking for their young "detained" relations to be returned to them...to no avail. Letters on file with one survivor from Glin
Back to the true story of our maternal grandmother born 13th February 1916 in Longford...she was never told that 4 year old Christine was committed to Golden bridge "convent" via children's court Dec 1950...
Garda report for Jan 1951 indicates that they made no effort to contact Christine's parents before her court date in Dec. 1950. The gardai assumed that the "nuns" at the "convent" had Christine's concerns, welfare & education at heart?
Our maternal grandmother could not threaten the nuns at Goldenbridge convent from 1950 onwards... because she didn't know she was there. Children who were abused in such institutions were "taught" to hate their mothers or fathers or however "dumped" them.. children assumed their
Parents who were still alive but never visited ...knew where they were incarcerated... children assumed?
Our maternal grandmother didn't know where Christine was...when she had asked at 50 middle abbey street after 1950 she was told that her black Irish 4 year old was sent to Australia for adoption... despite the fact that adoption was not an option for Irish mixed race children.
Also on record "orphans" committed or detained at Irish convents could Not legally be adopted, after they received criminal record. As our maternal grandmother had understood from Christian Bros. & Nuns...she had no rights as a mother... Our gran did not know Christine was at GB
Q. How could she get to Australia? She had a a sister living there since mid 1920s, who could not afford to return to visit Ireland...our Gran did not know that Christine had a criminal record detained at GB convent for "receiving alms" (Ryan report confirms children
... bribed typically with a penny outside the children's court in front of w.itnesses) to "prove same child recipient of alms" or begging... for those committing same child for detention as having "proof" of criminal behaviour... See Ryan report v May 2009 via CICA)
