As a convert from reactionary religion, I can say that this is a an unfortunate example of how converts should realize that our experience is atypical, and that emerging minorities need more help to be heard than a billionaire media mogul who can easily speak for herself.
People who have overcome fundamentalist indoctrination have a temptation to think that everyone is just as willing to do the same in their own lives with enough information.

Unfortunately, this is just not true. It's why there are far more evangelicals than #exvangelicals...
But if you were to try to engage in this persuasion effort, you would do it by highlighting the voices of trans people rather than the voices of people who hate them.

No one is perfect, but at the very least, this would be the way to start compassionate and rational dialogue.
I would also note, as @perdricofha has, that gender-affirming care is very common--but only for cisgender teens and adults. liberalcurrents.com/the-actual-ubi…
Additionally, @meganphelps also seems to subscribe to the reductionist notion of a "marketplace of ideas" thinking similar to Joe Rogan.

Advocates for this idea never acknowledge that all actual marketplaces are subject to rules and decorum, and must be to be useful and safe. Image
Finally, I would add that lies and rumors about allowing trans people to have full equality are the exact same tactics used against same-sex marriage.

Everyone can see that heterosexual people are still able to get married. We had nothing taken away by including others. /end
PS: I misspelled the Twitter handle of the author of the excellent @LiberalCurrents essay I linked above. It's @perdricof. Worth a follow!

ChatGPT has some amazing capabilities, but it has problems w/ a very basic task, counting the number of characters in an input.

It thinks that the input "Do you like beans" contains 15 characters, which it obviously does not.

This has very serious implications, clearly. Image
As a silly example, ChatGPT can't decode from the simple substitution cipher, ROT13.

It seems to have another issue as well which is that it appears to be trying to do an idiomatic decipher of ROT13. Answer should be "This seems to be a difficult exercise for you". Image
Here's another person who had a ROT13 discussion with ChatGPT.

It doesn't appear that he got to the character counting bug, but he does have some interesting thoughts on the idea that its programmers didn't seem to have built cipher function jameswillia.ms/posts/chatgpt-…

🧵 I'm glad to see media elites taking somewhat seriously the profusion of falsehoods and mediocrity that generative AI like ChatGPT is just beginning to unleash.

But in truth, we've been living in a human-generated sea of information pollution since the rise of Facebook....
It's only when their own jobs were threatened that the high-level editors/producers have sat up.

Are Gateway Pundit, Alex Jones, etc. all that different from hallucinating AI?

Obviously there is a big difference of scale. But it's less than you may think.
Anti-science and pro-superstition content is drastically easier to generate than rational content.

Educational systems can work to help people disregard lies and misinformation. Which is why Republicans are escalating attacks on libraries and teachers.

🧵 Bitcoin and cryptocurrency aren't just bad investments, they're based on conspiracy theories

Let me begin by saying that I don't think that decentralized payment systems are inherently far-right, but the history of Bitcoin and the ideas behind it do flow directly from a conspiratorial worldview that is linked to racists and gold obsessives.
David and my discussion is based on his book "The Politics of Bitcoin: Software as Right-Wing Extremism" which you can purchase here. He's working on a longer version which will be out soon: upress.umn.edu/book-division/…

🧵 Today's world of big tech domination has become more centralized, more unequal, & more politically extreme. It didn't have to be this way.

As the US and Soviet Union continued their struggles in the Cold War, a few Soviet academics came up with the idea of using computers to make central planning responsive to the people. They called it "cybernetic communism." Basically it was using tech to run a supply chain.
The idea terrified American Kremlinologists.

Not only would cybernetic communism, if implemented, be a great strategic economic method, it would also be an incredible propaganda tool. A real vision of the future that wasn't capitalist. Something had to be done.

🧵 Comedians have always needed to update their material, but lately, some of them have taken to attacking audiences instead.

This is a summary of the latest @TheoryChange episode featuring @lisa_curry. Read, watch, or listen at the link or continue here: flux.community/matthew-sheffi…
Before we get into the details, please check out Lisa's Instagram page for some of her standup material. She's a working comedian who tours across the country. You can check out her work: instagram.com/olympianlisacu…
Standup comedy as an industry hasn't been around very long compared to other performing arts like plays, music & dance. And with comedy, humor really is in the eye of the beholder. Most people have trouble seeing artistry of jokes they don't think are funny.

The Twitter Files threads have not revealed much of anything consequential. What's far more significant about them is what they do not talk at all about:
-Saudi Arabia
-China
-Any country besides US
-Private communications by Elon Musk with heads of state and other politicians
Musk's ties to Chinese and Saudi governments are far more extensive than anything talked about in the Twitter files. He desperately doesn't want people to know how dependent he is on these two adversaries of the U.S.
There are a number of serious issues regarding Saudi Arabia and the previous Twitter management. An ex-Twitter employee with privileged access to user account data was convicted & sentenced to 3 years of prison for his Saudi spying. news.yahoo.com/former-twitter…
