At the center of their service is AIMS. A never-before-seen software for creating not bots - but avatars. Complex digital personas that seem real and operate across platforms. AIMS has almost 40k haaretz.com/israel-news/se…
The fake accounts are grouped and AIMS' avatar management dashboard boasts: “African, Arabian, Armenian, Brazilian, Canada, European (mix), Philippines, Russia, Senegal, South America, Ukraine, USA and Zimbabwe.” #TeamJorge@FredMetzo@GurMegiddo
AIMS also allows the creation of new accounts - they automatic creation of new avatars, with unique names, pics (stolen from real people), an email and even a phone number
All the avatars have SMS verified emails. After they are created, the system can register them to other websites - from Amazon to Discord and even Airbnb. Some, Jorge claimed, even had crypto wallets
To “groom” their avatars - an industry term for non-nefarious activity intended to make the fake accounts look human - they post generic viral content like Buzzfeed or NatGeo
To test them, we asked for a test campaign. Start a rumor that Emmanuel the Emu had died a peaceful natural death. #Rip_Emmanuel led us to 1800+ fake accounts.
Other campaigns involved Peter Nygard, aka the Canadian Jeffrey Epstein. When we met in their office in a suburb of Tel Aviv, armed with spy cams, they boasted their role in the campaign. Others involved embattled oligarchs or even the Polisaro Front
In fact, emails we’ve obtained show they and not Blackcube are the Israeli hackers that were involved in the 2015 Nigerian election. They also pitched the Trump campaign h/t @skirchy
Many times, journalists, especially women are targeted by disinfo ops.
Journalists publish under our real names, we are held accountable for what we say and write. Bylines expose us publicly, and that’s good. But it also comes at a price #TeamJorge@FredMetzo@GurMegiddo
The Wire, an Indian outlet that has done amazing reporting on disinfo, were themselves the victims of a targeted campaign that successfully managed to undermine their credibility
Anonymous leak pages on FB or pay-to-publish sites that allow anyone to post fake news help dilute the truth and undermine our ability to trust anything or anyone we see online. haaretz.com/israel-news/se…
This content pollution. And like real pollution, it has very real consequences.

Female journalist have it the worst. Grari Lankish died because of incitement fueled in part by hateful politics and in party by people with social media & tech savvy scaling it
Post the CA scandal, they cut access to researchers and started developing technologies intended to prevent just the very automatization #TeamJorge having been selling since before, during and since
Removing accounts is not enough. Sometimes they're caught, but those behind them are rarely exposed or held accountable
They say democracy dies in darkness. These are the guys turning off the lights & helping bad guys cut the power. They&their clients need to be put in the light
Team Jorge’s avatar army may be fake, but their targets are real people and they cause real damage - both online and irl #TeamJorge@FredMetzo@GurMegiddo
They hide their ops behind proxies. They hide themselves w fake names and burner numbers. They have no photos or digital footprint. Until today, its likely none of their targets knew they existed. #TeamJorge@FredMetzo@GurMegiddo theguardian.com/world/2023/feb…

Their software: AIMS, an advanced system for creating and deploying fake accounts without detection
SCOOP Meet Toka, an Israeli camera hacking firm set up by former PM Ehud Barak and the IDF’s ex-cyber chief. It sells only to intel bodies and law enforcement and allows them to “access” and “alter” camera feeds haaretz.com/israel-news/se…
Toka is under Israeli ministry of defense oversight - its clients are mostly US and it’s allies in the west, but also includes Israel and likely Singapore Revealed: The Israeli Firm Selling ‘Dystopian’ Hacking Capabilities - National Security & Cyber haaretz.com/israel-news/se…
According to a company pitch deck obtained by @Haaretz@haaretzcom, Toka offers “previously out-of-reach capabilities” that “transform untapped IoT sensors into intelligence sources,” and can be used “for intelligence and operational needs.”
Together w Lighthouse Reports & Inside Story we analysed/cross-referenced hundreds of flight records, linking the plane to key locations, and combed dozens of passenger lists, corporate filings, employment records & secret/open data sources haaretz.com/israel-news/se…
We tracked the plane to Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Riyadh. Confidential docs show the company was pushing hard for deals in Africa, and had engaged a network of known arms dealers to pitch its products to Sudan, Mozambique, Angola, Kenya Equatorial Guinea. haaretz.com/israel-news/se…
A short thread on Pegasus, the Israeli occupation and how we define terror in wake of this AMAZING Guardian scoop about the CIA calling BS on Israel's claim that Palestinian rights orgs are terror groups- a claim based on intel collected by hacking phones theguardian.com/world/2022/aug…
Last October, Israel's then defense minister blacklisted six Palestinian orgs. The move caused an outcry among rights groups across the world. But Israel was adamant these were NOT rights groups but terror groups haaretz.com/israel-news/20…
"The groups are controlled by the senior leadership of the PFLP and employ many members of the group in jobs in both management and on the ground – including activists who were involved in terrorism," Israel said at the time.
They bear all the hallmarks of what we’d expect from a mobile tactical interception system: for example access to call logs and messages - including those from encrypted apps like WhatsApp
Report says Israeli spyware was used in Trinidad and Tobago to spy on lawmakers, journalists and judges.
However, it may not be NSO but a different Israeli spyware – one recently found on the phone of a Greek journalist >> THREAD haaretz.com/israel-news/te…
My sources suggest that the spyware that may have been purchased by the Caribbean state is called #Predator and it is created by a different Israeli spyware firm called #Cytroxhaaretz.com/israel-news/te…
Why them and not NSO? In 2018, a Haaretz investigation by @HShezaf & @JonathanJacobso revealed that Israeli companies had sold espionage and intelligence-gathering software to a number of countries in the past - and Trinidad and Tobago was among them haaretz.com/israel-news/.p…
