I’ve been talking to a number of acquaintances in Russia.
These are well-educated professionals who speak English fluently, many of whom have lived/worked in the US/Europe. Some are highly critical of Putin, and many were very much opposed to the SMO.
Some observations.
1/12
They are universally shocked at the racist Russophobia, from Europe especially. “I thought they were our friends/partners!” is a common complaint.
They don’t understand why Europe destroyed its own economy with the sanctions. (There’s quite a bit of schadenfreude over that.)
2/
They don’t understand why the Germans are not reacting to the Nord Stream terrorist attack. They see it as self-evident that the Americans did it—an act of war by one of Germany’s closest ally.
They have zero trust in the Europeans—because of the Russophobia and revelations.
3/
Hollande and Merkel have publicly bragged about how the Minsk agreements were entered into to buy time to arm Kiev.
This has had a huge impact on them.
So they won’t accept any negotiations or ceasefire. They all think Russia would be played for fools again by the West.
4/
Even the “doves” believe that the conflict can only end in total victory, i.e. complete military occupation of Ukraine.
They don’t look forward to this—but they believe it is the only solution to guarantee Russian safety.
5/
They all view this conflict as a Russia vs. NATO war. And they all believe this war will last for years.
There is a palpable sense of determination and *relief* that they too—like their grandfathers before—are involved in an existential war for the survival of their nation.
6/
They one and all despise the Russians who fled to Europe, Israel and Georgia.
They view them as fair-weather friends at best—traitors at worst. They all made it clear that they would not be welcomed back at the end of this conflict.
7/
Even the “doves” respect Putin, and they laugh at the idea of “regime change in Russia”.
The principal criticism of Putin is that he’s been too gentle, too patient. Many (not all) would prefer a scorched earth, total war campaign, specifically targeting the Kiev leadership.
8/
All in all, they are satisfied with their leadership. Lavrov was universally praised, Peskov the one least respected. Shoigu, Gerasimov and Surovikin were all endorsed, though they all took some criticism, mostly because they think the war is going too slowly.
9/
Interestingly, I sensed a gnawing anxiety over Russia’s economy, which seems to be going so well—as if it’s too good to be true.
The 2015 sanctions nearly broke their economy—but now, with even worse sanctions, none are experiencing a loss of standard of living.
10/
They seem to have lost their respect, admiration—and fear—of the West. Certainly their trust. They all believe that “human rights”, “democracy”, etc. are empty platitudes the West uses to get its way.
They see the West as a paper tiger, run by fools and degenerates.
11/
This is inevitably a very biased selection of opinions: Highly educated, well traveled, Western-oriented, fairly well-to-do people aged 27–60.
So imagine how much more conservative Russian working class people’s opinions would be.
Food for thought.

Addendum: Yes, I forgot to include this point, which is true of popular sentiment in Russia.
The whole GATE conspiracy theory has deeply intrigued me since I first heard about it a year or so ago.
Growing up in SoCal in the early ’70’s, I went to several gifted programs, in preschool, kindergarten and first grade, until we moved to Chile and they were interrupted.
GATE—“Gifted And Talented Education”—is supposed to be this MK-Ultra type government program for bright little kids, trying to get “creativity in a bottle”.
When I first heard about this conspiracy theory, I thought it was just some 4chan bullshit—
—until I saw this card.
2/
I remember very clearly playing with those flashcards in pre-school—we had stacks of hundreds of them. (Though I remember them a different color.)
But what we actually did with them I find impossible to remember. Only that it was one of the activities we regularly did.
3/
Both Napoleon and Hitler’s generals claimed the Russians used human-wave attacks in order to justify their losses, and at the same time dehumanize the Russian defenders.
It was a way for them to justify their strategic and operational failures — and ultimately their defeats.
2/
When you compare German and Russian forces in WWII, and more importantly compare military casualties, you find that they were close to equal.
It was the German generals in the postwar that insisted on Russian human-wave tactics — to cover their asses.
3/
Thus the entrenched regime is forced to clamp down on ALL opposition—including the reasonable opposition—so as to prevent the extremists from gaining power.
Two things happens as a result:
2/
First, the legitimate grievances of the people—which the entrenched regime would want to ameliorate for the sake of maintaining good relations with the people—cannot be addressed, as the entrenched regime prioritizes holding on to power against American interference.
3/
A Turkish news outlet published what is alleged to be a leaked Mossad intelligence assessment of Russian and Kiev Regime battlefield losses in the conflict.
The KIA figures dovetail exactly with reports from Col. Douglas Macgregor and the BBC.
Macgregor has stated pubicly that Kiev has lost 157,000 troops. The BBC recently estimated Russia had lost between 12,000 and 20,000 troops, which fits the 18,480 Mossad figure.
2/
That the Mossad figure and Macgregor’s number of KIA coincide makes me believe they both came from the same source—likely the Pentagon.
Notice the WIA: Russia has a 2.5-to-1 ratio, while UA has a 1.5-to-1. UA wounded aren't being evacuated, or there's not enough medical.

So Israel apparently has attacked Iran, targeting factories that I would guess produced components for the drones used by Russia.
The US and Israel carried out joint military exercises recently, and some US officials visited Jerusalem. This was planned.
What does this mean.
1/
Quite obviously, the Americans realize that the war is lost in Ukraine. So by giving Israel the greenlight for this attack, they have two goals.
1. They are trying to degrade the drones that the Russians are using, assuming of course they are fully manufactured in Iran.
2/
2. Much more importantly, the Americans are also trying to provoke the Russians into escalation—and overstretch them. The Americans seek to widen the war by having Russia support Iran and inevitably turn against Israel.
