This will be a series of tweets where I will recommend chess book titles for adult improvers, typically ratings below 2000 (still a wide range).
Opening: I am a big fan of chessable courses but mainly the ones where you can interact with the author, so check if he/she typically responds on the discussion forum within 1-2 days so it doesn't stop your study progress
Other good opening books are easy guides, step by step and starting out series. Openng books/courses should focus on ideas and concepts, there should not be a lot of move memorization.
Tactics: There are many puzzle books and resources and there is not really a need to buy anything new. Chess.com and Lichess.com have free tools and one of the best book series is called the step method.
I would not do any book on calculation or endgame study for chess improvement (yes you can enjoy the studies!). You train your calculation already via the tactic puzzles and studies miss the clear tactical themes.
Positional chess: Sakaev and Landa wrote two great volumes on positional chess, Herman Grooten is excellent on chess strategy and of course I should not forget to mention Silman.
Endgame: you need only one good endgame book or course and again SIlman comes to mind. Only with a rating>2000 I would recommend either 100 endgames you must know or Dvoretsky's endgame manual and in both cases I prefer the chessable course over the book
Game collections: move by move explanations are good books so Lakdawala has a series and I really enjoyed Nunn's move by move.
Here some books for the more advanced player, I think >2000: Sokolov's sacrifice and initiative, and chess middlegame series; Tal: Tal - Botvinnik 1960; Karolyi: Endgame virtuoso Magnus Carlsen, Shereshevsky mastering the endgame 1 + 2
Two good books by Marovic on pawn play in chess for >1800 audlt improvers #chesspunks

Dear #chesspunks is there a need to combine book titles with indicative ratings based on our own reading experience? If there is a lot of enthusiasm I could run a pilot
I would post a poll for 1 title with different ratings (e.g. >1400 >1600 >2000), below I put my own impressions (if any) and the result of the poll together with the book title I can add to a pinned tweet series.
Besides voting you can also reply in text to inform the other readers of your impressions. The system is of course not water proof and I also don't know if there is a lot of interest for this. So vote below and feel free to leave comment!
