On this Presidents' Day, we call for an action-rooted commemoration of Bloody Sunday on Sunday, March 5. Read and sign on to open letter to President Biden and Members of Congress. #SelmaIsSacredGround, not a place for political pretense. breachrepairers.org/selma. @BRepairers
Ahead of the 58th anniv. of Bloody Sunday, @brepairers is joined in this call by Rev. Liz Theoharis @liztheo, Hank Sanders, Faya Rose Toure, Rev. Mark Thompson @ministter, Rebecca Marion, Board Chair, Bridge Crossing Jubilee, Rev. Carolyn Foster of the @AlabamaPPC, and others.
We demand action on Voting Rights, Living Wages, and Rural Economic Investment. "If the President or other politicians are going to come to Selma, they should come on Bloody Sunday, when John Lewis and others were beaten and almost killed."
Politicians coming to Selma must declare that the fight for voting rights and the restoration of what advocates marched across that bridge for is not over.
Politicians coming to Selma should pledge to restore and expand voting rights. They should come to say that they will intensify the battle for living wages that Dr. King talked about at the end of the Selma to Montgomery March & intensify economic investment in rural areas.
We caution all politicians who have done little or even blocked the restoration of the VRA but want to come down to Selma for a photo op on Saturday and undermine the sacredness of Sunday. #SelmaIsSacredGround, not a place for political pretense. breachrepairers.org/selma.

Mr President, in your State of the Union address tonight, please don’t forget the 140 million poor & low-income people who were struggling to survive before you took office & are still hurting w/out living wages & access to healthcare.
This other America has struggled under every administration w/out their voices & policy issues being heard. 700 souls die every day in this nation b/c of poverty.
Too many measure the health of the economy by how well the stock market is doing & whether the price of gas is down. But please don’t forget the other America, which represents over 40% of the electorate—ppl of every race & region w/out whom you nor any Democrat could win.

In a nuclear age, the constant escalation of force can lead to a nuclear war that kills us all. This spirit of death and warring madness must be challenged. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Those of you who choose to respond please listen to the sermon I preached on this issue. Don’t respond in a vacuum.
In the Guardian I’m raising and moral issue before humanity not who started the war or whose to blame or the efficacy of tanks etc

Jesus said the Gospel is about good news to the poor, welcoming all people, caring for the least of these: the immigrant, the hungry, the sick, the imprisoned. Christian nationalism attempts to sanctify oppression and not liberation. It attempts to sanctify lies and not truth.
At best, Christian nationalism is a form of theological malpractice. At worst, it's a form of heresy.
The scripture says God loves all people. If a nation is going to embrace Christian values, then we got to know what those values are. And they certainly aren't anti-gay, anti-abortion, pro-tax cut, pro-one party, and pro-gun. There's nowhere in the scriptures Jesus lifts that up.

Today I’m glad to announce the new Center for Public Theology & Public Policy at @YaleDivSchool. This new Center will prepare a new generation of moral leaders to be active participants in creating a just society. theologyandpolicy.yale.edu
I’ve been a pastor & moral activist for 35 yrs. I want to share what I’ve learned & lead research on the deep connection between theology & just policies.
Our work will engage people in critical reflection on our society, not limited to a partisan analysis, but based on the possibility of a moral grounding of public policy in America.

Grateful for the invitation to offer this prayer as guest chaplain of the US House today:

Merciful God, help us submit ourselves to the truth of your Word, knowing that what we do only matters and lasts if it is rooted in love for your glory.
Remind us that you are the God who can melt clouds of sin and sadness, and you, O God, can bring down rulers from temporal and finite thrones. We’re thankful you are the same God who lifts the humble. Remind and strengthen us to do the same with whatever power we have.
By your Spirit, don’t let us forget that your mercy for those who fear you. Remind us that to fear you is to align our public deeds with Jesus, who declares, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to preach good news to the poor.”

Your interview on @MSNBC last night was powerful, @amyklobuchar. As a preacher, let me say: sermons require an altar call to action. With the election of Sen Warnock by a fusion coalition in the South, Dems have more power in this moment than you will have until after 2024.
When McConnell had what you have, he spit in democracy’s face & cared more about stacking SCOTUS w/ extremists than passing laws to keep people out of caskets. You can instead bring to America a new flood of justice like flowing rivers.
W/ the majority you have right now, restore the VRA. Pass the John Lewis Bill, living wages & women’s right to choose as a federal right. You know Republicans would do the opposite if they had the power. If you wait, it will be at least 3 years before you have the chance again.
