For those of you who don’t know, I am a Miko (Shrine Maiden) in training! I completed my intermediate level at Miko School, and I hope to (finally!) finish my training this year
I get asked questions about Shinto religion sometimes, so here is a basic thread!
Q: I’m not Japanese, can I practice Shinto? Is it a closed religion?
A: YES, you can practice Shinto! It isn’t a closed religion; anyone can practice Shinto.
(Please note that practicing Shinto doesn’t “make” you Japanese! I have seen weebs try this and I’m ????)
Q: Do I need to formally dedicate myself like in a ritual or something similar to baptism?
A: Nope! For anyone to start practicing, there is no formal initiation required. If you wish to go to a shrine and state in your heart/prayer that you wish to worship, that’s up to you!
Q: Do I need a kamidana at home?
A: You don’t NEED one, but it is helpful! I start my day praying at mine tbh.
If you can’t get a kamidana, there is a super cute app called “kamidana”. I often use it even though I have a physical one now. It’s very helpful!
Q: Okay, I’m interested but I don’t live in Japan. Are there any shrines near me?
A: Perhaps! Here is a *verified* list of shrines outside of Japan. Please note that sometimes people try to start illegitimate shrines outside Japan
Q: You go to Miko School? That’s super cool! Where do you train?
A: I train here in Osaka. Yes, you DO need Japanese. The school is the first formal Miko school in Japan, but it’s expanding! We have several branches.
Also, the fabulous @KaitlynUgoretz contributed to the Religion for Breakfast’s YouTube video about Shinto! She’s a great resource, and she knows her stuff!
Most Japanese people say this because… most Japanese people actually don’t know that much about Shinto in-depth 😅. They know the basics at best (how to pray, basic Shinto mythology, etc)
I’m in my mid/late 30s and I have senpai older AND younger than me, so no age limit!
As for how long it takes to work at a shrine, it really depends on how serious you’re training!
Basic Miko jobs at New Year’s (selling amulets and whatnot) doesn’t take very long afaik.
But my training is more serious.
I had a workshop for each level + extra review/hands on
I’m required to practice how to give offerings, lead prayer in cases of an ordained Priest not being present, and more.
So, it depends on what kind of job you’re doing and how much you’re contributing to the shrine as a Miko afaik! My education has only been through the school
WOW this has really blown up
Hi! I’m also a professional kimono stylist! I talk about kimono here: @mainichi_kimono

the fact that this “definition” of Passport Bros is the highest rated one really says more than it should (and NOT in a good way)
The most hilarious thing as someone who has lived abroad since 2007 is watching how disappointed these Passport Bros get when they realize that these foreign women are NOT going to put up with their crap
They are expecting docile and submissive but then the dream gets shattered
I can’t count how many times a man like this has come to me for advice about his Asian wife
“You’re mixed Japanese so you understand Asian women… what am I doing wrong? Why is my wife always upset with me?”
Because… you’re a bum? You’re not pulling your own weight, my guy
the day that either a) Twitter makes it so that Twitter Blue folks CAN’T be blocked/muted or b) you have to subscribe to Twitter Blue to even be able to block/mute is the day I leave this site
and given Melon Tusks’ fragile ego, I see that coming
People are blocking Melon and other Twitter Blue subscribers, and that’s clearly infuriating him horribly. At this point, his delicate sensibilities are running this site more than anything else
I won’t lie; I’m upset. I’ve somehow managed to make my venting into the void about bad Japan takes into a decently large-ish platform. I’ve met some incredible people here in Japan as a result
But if I can’t protect myself with the ability to block people, then forget it
ah yes because picking up a paintbrush and applying *thousands of hours worth of practice and heart* onto a canvas is the exact same amount of effort that tapping on an app to use stolen artwork from a database to generate an image
damn I *wish* simply picking up a camera made me a good photographer. I wish all I had to do was buy the equipment and then WABAM! instant perfect photography. no need to analyze or think at all, just have the equipment ready to go!
and I wish all I had to do to make my own clothes was have a sewing machine! no skill needed whatsoever! no thoughts, head empty. just buy cloth and watch machine go brrrrrrrrrr
I can’t speak for Tier 2 or Tier 3 cities, but I’ve seen these in Shanghai before.
Most metro stations are even so they don’t need the ramp, but the ramps do exist, like shown above
Now, I’m not gonna pretend that Mainland China is 100% accessible because it’s not. But compared to when I first arrived in 2005, it’s gotten a lot better.
Still has a long ways to go, but it’s a stretch to say that Mainland China doesn’t have these ramps at all
Ages ago, I recommended the Sail app for practicing Japanese. It’s not a perfect app, but I recommended it so strongly because not only is it an opportunity to speak with native Japanese speakers, but you’re partnered with an elderly person seeking companionship
I have students, mainly salarymen, who say that their job comes before their family, especially their parents. One of my students was annoyed that he had to keep taking time off work to take care of his aging mother.
It’s job > immediate family > parents for a lot of them
real talk: being divorced in your mid/late 30s after an 8 year relationship means dating is weird, especially for someone like me who typically DOESN’T date
I took one look at Bumble and NOPE’d right out of there. I don’t know how people do it. Things have changed a LOT
I’m demisexual, so unless I have real romantic feelings for someone, I don’t experience ANY sexual attraction. None.
I would make the perfect spy in some ways because I cannot be tempted in THAT way lol
but most people operate on a totally different wavelength to me
before meeting my ex, I think I was on OkCupid mainly for the personality quizzes. They had a nice Phantom of the Opera one I loved 😂
Never went on a single date either
Conversation felt like being an English teacher where I was constantly asking questions to get them to talk
