I have seen some really talented coders fall short of their potential. And, it had nothing to do with their passion or proficiency as coders and everything to do with their softer skills. Here is what can happen if we ignore these skills as we grow.
"I do some fantastic work but can neither showcase nor explain it properly. Sometimes other people get the credit because they can articulate it better." - This sucks, but it will never end until you work on it. Build your written and verbal #communication skills!
"As I have grown, there are more tasks and larger teams to manage, and I cannot do everything at once. So many things to get done; what do I do first?" - This will only get worse as your teams get larger. Learn how to #prioritize and #multi-task asap.
"Even per my own expectations, I delivered some shoddy work last week, which still bothers me. My confidence is a bit shaken." - You will end up working for 20+ years; at least you have lots of time to make it up. Get a short memory!
"I spend considerable time up-skilling, but I do not learn/experience anything else but my core skill. So what's the point?" - Learn to learn from unrelated things. It will make you better at work and in life. Just be #curious.
"I have been stuck at this for a while, consuming a lot of time. Worst of all, I have no idea of when or where to start." - Sadly, people find asking someone something a demeaning thing. Well, if someone knows a better way, why not? Know when to #ask for help.
"My team is large, but I feel I am only doing all the work. I am getting burnt out daily." - The art of delegation is critical to success. But it is an art, and there is a wrong way to do it. The right way takes effort, but just in the short term. #Delegate!
One should acquire many skills, but these are the ones I have seen hold people back the most. Skills take time to pick up, even these. Start today to see some change 3 months later. It won't happen overnight, but then, neither will success! #Practice them every day.
