Zainab (sa) was the child of Ali and Fatimah (sa). Sources suggest she was born in Medina in the 5th year of the Hijra (Wednesday,05 Jumadi' ul-Awwal, 5 A.H/October 03, 626 A.D Gregory Calendar ) .1/11
There is some debate over whether she was born on the 5th of Jumada al-awwal or the 1st of Sha'aban of the Islamic Calendar. Like her two elder brothers Hassan and Husayn, Zaynab was named by the Prophet Muhammad's Zainab made up of Zain (ornament) and ab (father)./2
Sayyeda Fatima (s.a.) and Imam Ali (a.s.) did not name their child until a few days after her birth, for they awaited the Prophet’s return from a journey so that he could propose the name. When finally the baby girl was brought before him he held her in his lap and kissed her./3
The name "Zaynab" means "the adornment of her father" (Baap ki Zeenat in Urdu). Three of Ali’s daughters were in fact named Zaynab so sometimes the Zaynab we are concerned with is referred to as “Zaynab the elder./4
Bibi Zainab(sa) had many titles, which describe her :/5
▪ Sabira (Patient)
▪ Aqeela e bani Hashim (The most Intelligent Lady of Bani Hashim),
▪ Aalima ghairi muallima (Learned without
being taught)
▪ Aabida (Worshipper)
▪ Faadilah (Virtuous)
▪ Kaamilah (Perfect).
When her father, Imam Ali (AS), saw his daughter for the first time Imam Hussain (a.s.), who was then almost three years old, was with him. The boy exclaimed in delight, “O father, Allah has given me a sister.”/6
In her character she reflected the best attributes of those who raised her. In sobriety and serenity she was likened to Umm ul-Muminin Khadija, her grandmother (s.a.); in chastity and modesty to her mother Fatima Zahra (s.a.);/7
in eloquence to her father Imam Ali (a.s.) in forbearance and patience to her brother Imam Hassan (a.s.); and in bravery and tranquility of the heart to Imam Hussain (a.s.). Her face reflected her father’s awe and her grandfather’s reverence./8
She grew up in Medina, where she was married to Abdullah ibn Jafar al-Tayyar, who was brought up under the direct care of the Prophet (pbuh & hp) Together they had five children, four of whom were sons, Ali, Aun, Muhammad, and Abbas, and one daughter, Umm Kulthum (sa) /9
when she was 55 years old. She witnessed the martyrdom of her own children, her nephews, companions, and most significantly her beloved brothers Abbas ibn Ali Talib (p) and Imam al Hussain (p). Sayyida Zainab’s (p) strong upbringing, piety, and nobility ensured./10
She, therefore, serves as an example of steadfastness, courage, humility, and strength for all of us.
On this happy occasion May Allah bless us with a visit to holy shrine of Lady Zainab's (Aamen)
Congratulations to all of you on the birth of Bibi Zainab (sa). /11
