Many papers fail because the introduction is badly written.
Luckily, Gráinne de Burca, Co-Editor in Chief of the Int'l J. Constitutional Law, and prof. at @nyulaw, explained it at the #iconswritingschool. @ICON__S.
A thread
(1)A good introduction catches the attention of the reader. Make them eager to read the article! Make them willing to know more! Make the piece appealing and intriguing!
(2)State the issue with clarity. What is the problem that your paper will shed light on? Set the issue and make the reader understand that an answer is necessary
(3)Clarify your claim. Enunciate your argument. What is the solution to the problem that you have identified? You found the problem, now you spell out the solution
(4) Say why your paper is important. Why is your paper relevant? Why is the solution that you offer significant? Is it innovative? Is it timely? Is it topical? SAY IT.
(5)Provide a roadmap: Keep it succinct, but it will really help the reader go through the paper with ease.
(6) As a matter of style... Keep the introduction brief! It should not be more than 2-3 pages TOPS.
(7)Keep it simple! Avoid archaic language. Simplicity is the keyword. An easy introduction will make the reader thirsty for more knowledge
(8)When to write the introduction? You can pen a provisional one at the beginning, but the introduction should be rewritten at the end.
