Terrible news.

The first drag ban has passed in Tennessee, and goes to the governors desk.

It could easily ban pride. It bans public drag. It bans transgender people performing, who are just living their lives.

It charges them with a felony!

It is blatantly unconstitutional.
This bill is an atrocity committed at all trans and gender nonconforming people as well as all drag artists.

It bans "male and female impersonators" from "providing entertainment that appeals to prurient interest."

Witnesses drew no distinction between drag and trans people.
A trans comedian getting on stage telling an off color joke could be "appealing to the prurient interest."

Trans comedians could be charged with a felony.

It gets worse though.
Transgender people and drag artists dancing in a pride parade could be considered criminal.

Cops could begin arresting people at pride events in Tennessee for being "male or female impersonators" dancing down the street as so many of us have seen and partaken in.
What even is "male or female impersonation?" It's unconstitutionally vague and goes undefined in the law.

Many people testified that transgender people are "prurient" by merely existing.

Drag queen story hours will no longer be rushed by proud boys, but cops.
This is an absolutely atrocious day. It must fall in court. Tennessee Republicans should be ashamed of passing it.

Contact the governor of Tennessee Bill Lee and demand he veto this terrible bill.
This bill brings us back to pre-Stonewall era in Tennessee in many ways.

Terrible.

Must watch.

Trans Rep Zooey Zephyr just gave one of the fiercest speeches on the Montana House floor against a bill that bans drag and could target Pride.

They interrupted her several times to stop her when she spoke about how it affected the trans community.

She persisted.
The second half of her speech, they kept trying to object every time she mentioned the trans community. Watch as she even used the bills own words and testimony from proponents as they tried to object to even that.

The Montana House then went on to shamefully pass the bill.
Montana's bill bans drag anywhere in public. It does not distinguish between drag and trans people performing. It merely says "male and female impersonators."

During the hearing, we saw MANY people refer to trans people as "impersonators." ImageImage

Happening now, the Montana House will debate HB359, a bill that would ban public drag in the state of Montana.

It will target transgender people, anyone gender nonconforming that "performs," and drag artists.

It bans "male and female impersonators"

You can watch the House Floor with me right now in Montana. At time of posting, they are on a separate bill. They will likely move to the drag bill in 30-40 minutes.

Transgender activists have scored a major victory in Wyoming!

The first healthcare ban for trans youth in a red state with a Republican trifecta has fallen.

Lets look at how they did it.

These bills have been moving through several states across the United States. They seek to ban transgender youth from gender affirming care. Here is a map of all of the states where they are proposed with either (R) trifectas or supermajorities:

(Wyoming removed!) Image
Much of the testimony that swayed Republicans seemed to hinge on 3 factors:
- The threats to the insurance marketplace by violating federal law.
- The lack of protections for mental healthcare.
- The inclusion of puberty blockers in the bill.

MAJOR victory.

The first gender affirming care ban to fail in committee in a red state just happened in Wyoming, SF0144 ("Chloe's Law"), named after Chloe Cole.

Wyoming's House Appropriations Committee has given it a Do Not Pass.

Good job, Wyoming activists. you did it.
This bill passed the Wyoming state senate.

This is massive. We were heading for possibly 20 states passing this care ban this year.

Wyoming has rejected it.

Now lets push back in all of the other states and urge legislators to stop this hateful legislation.
Wyoming activists, please get in touch with me and talk about how you did it.

We need to hear what worked for you.

I'm not mincing my words anymore.

The legislative assault on transgender people is a genocide against us.

It seeks to remove us from public life, remove all legal protections, remove our trans children from parents, remove their medically necessary care. It will kill people.
Stop turning your head and looking away.

Stop thinking you can just walk around in a land where 360 bills target us in every way imaginable, and in ways that we couldn't even imagine every single day.
Call this what it is and treat it as such.

This isn't "a difference of opinion" anymore.

This is meaningful action taken to limit our movement in society and to attack our quality of life to such a degree it becomes unsustainable to go on living for many of us.

A new bill in Florida makes accusing someone of transphobic discrimination defamation, with $35k penalties + court and lawyer fees.

It could be used to stifle speech and protect transphobia from criticism across the U.S.

erininthemorn.substack.com/p/fl-bill-make…
The bill, HB991, states that allegations of transphobic discrimination are defamation.

You can't use the person's "religious" or "scientific" beliefs to prove transphobia.

They can then sue you for $35k.

I can't begin to explain how bad this is.
Defamation laws can lead to forum shopping (relevant recently in the Depp/Heard case).

If your tweet or article is distributed in Florida, you could possibly be sued there.

At minimum it could apply to national speech targeted at FL residents.
