here are two identical bell curves, separated by one standard deviation

we talk a lot around here about "failure to distinguish the general from the particular", but it goes both ways Image
normal people live here

here, the distributions are only weakly predictive - a lot can happen! what can you say!

if you are normal, your irl experience has taught you that it's not just immoral but *dumb* to generalize too strongly here, where you live

& you are correct Image
if you are +1SD, you live here

you still see a lot of blue here, which tantalizes - clearly blue can do well in this world, the blue you meet seems pretty normal, maybe we are Not So Different

a little harder to defend, but still a good way to live, if you live here Image
if you're exceptional, though, you live here, & the differences are much harder to ignore

this is also where almost all important things happen Image
lots of other newsworthy things happen here, mostly bad/sad things

if anyone has visited a place like this, you can't help wanting it to be different, you're desperate for a solution - it's like hell Image
It's very, very stupid not to generalize here, & when people refuse to it's very frustrating

these places are also where viral social media phenomena happen, so if you live on this segment of the curve & see this all day long, social media is an intensely validating place to be ImageImage
is that a good thing? idk

when the normie tells you to touch grass, he is inviting you to meditate on this Image

In the three countries in which it arose, fascism was a reaction of the middle-class to the unwillingness or incapacity of the ruling class to resist communism

In each case the ruling class (correctly) regarded the fascists as boorish, historically illiterate, & dangerous
This guy was not a Nazi who grew a liberal conscience

He was an aristocrat who watched as his country was slowly piloted into an iceberg by a gang of dumb schizos on meth

whether he could have done any more than he did is an interesting question Image
Sorry for not clearly labeling the hero and protagonist of 1930s Germany you mongs

Dune 2 is about God making fools of everyone including Denis Villeneuve & Frank Herbert

There's a true story here & it's just extremely obvious where the storytellers are not true to it

The stuff that doesn't work sticks out so clearly as an edit, not of a piece with the whole
Timothèe Chalameê: mostly very good

The parts where he is "acting" Messianic are where he is most true & believable

The parts where he resists his mission & despairs that they won't let him be a humble ordinary boy ring false

(this is the whole movie in microcosm)

Stilgar: mostly very good

You can feel so clearly when Bardem allows himself to love the character & inhabit his perspective, & when he is making fun of him, distancing himself

Your godless lib credentials are immaculate, there's no reason & no excuse to chicken out like this Image

If a category includes everything, it means nothing

"limiting" & "exclusionary" is literally what categories are

of course he's implying some ineffable *spiritual* essence to Scottishness but if you try to nail him down on who exemplifies it he'll say that's exclusionary too
And if there is some ineffable spiritual essence to Scottishness, do we offer govt benefits or franchise only to True Scotsmen?

Obviously not - the purpose of this kind of talk is not to define the category under consideration but to eradicate it

When we talk about a War on Distinction it doesn't just mean moral distinctions, but actually distinctions of any kind

"Noticing" is not a euphemism for noticing a particular set of ideologically inconvenient facts, but noticing as such

You can tell your churchgoing aunt that her faith is being deployed cynically by people who hate her, but she's not supposed to care who makes the critique - only whether it's true

Can you explain to her why she shouldn't wash an abortionist's feet?

That's all that matters
The lie here is not that Jesus said to Love Your Enemies (he did, & you should)

The lie is that you ought to prefer your enemies, or that your enemies get to tell you what loving them means, or that loving your enemies is inconsistent with arguing with them, or killing them
I don't mean it cynically, I take the Lord's words very seriously & I want to hear him

But he loved everyone in Sodom & Canaan with a perfect love - also every Make-a-Wish kid

If God has no obligation to make your life painless, I certainly don't

Disparate impact is the stealth abolition of private property

Disparate impact renders all goods de facto non-excludable - anything you offer to customers must also be accessible to vandals & parasites

Which means that all goods become a Commons, subject to the Tragedy thereof
Disparate impact is not an immediate & direct abolition of property because the impact is examined in court, case by case

So instead of a spasm of bolshevik violence you have this spreading tumor of communist dysfunction in every domain where disparate impact has been tested
There's a very neat train of logic:

If HBD is not real, then disparate outcomes are prima facie evidence of discrimination

Because HBD is real, disparate outcomes are ubiquitous

This contradiction is precisely what gives the Left power - a limitless mandate to expropriate

Catastrophe is a commons

Institutions can't respond to the threat of demographic collapse for the same reason they can't respond to the threat of nuclear war

The problem is so catastrophic that you can't bet on being right about it

(full episode here: ) blog.exitgroup.us/p/54-natal-con…
Yep - the only groups that can respond to existential risks like these are groups that might conceivably survive them

Your family can prepare for demographic collapse - your retirement fund manager can't

(which means there's arbitrage lying around)

China is a nation - the decisionmaking apparatus encompasses its externalities

USG is a pile of fiefs & constituencies that not only can't respond to the threat, they can't even feel it

Getting them to act like a nation would be a hell of a vibe shift
