Long years ago when I was still in school, I was entrusted to watch boiling dal while mom and dad went to visit the temple.
Only, I was reading a book seated in another room while keeping that eagle eye on the dal. But these are minor details that have no bearing
#twory
At some point grey smoke began to appear from the kitchen, I hurried inside. Did you know that burning food creates grey lingering smoke and a stench that can put dead rats to shame? Did you know that burnt dal gets stuck to the vessel and takes
A lot of cleaning. One mishap, many lessons. My problem was that they'd be back any time and I was going to pretend that nothing had happened. I cleaned and scrubbed, switched on all the fans and put dal to boil in a new vessel. I heard the grilled door of the lift slam shut.
The doorbell rang and I opened the door to two pairs of highly judgey eyes with their noses covered. The grey smoke that had cleared out of the kitchen had congregated in the corridor, taking the odor with it. 'The dal cooked,' I announced gaily. My father hmphed while my mom
Gave me her most eloquent kathakali eyed glare, these dancers I tell you, they'll make a saint feel guilty with a look. I protested my innocence though nobody had charged me. Amma went to the kitchen, looked into the vessel and glared at me some more. 'Arre, you asked me to
Boil the dal, I did it, na. Why're both of you always blaming me like this? You especially!'
Turned out, she thought she had good reason
She'd put tur dal to boil but what got cooked was mung dal
but, these things can happen, you know?

Our world has kept changing but we remain the same.
The changes are in the reach of technology, while we remain willing to adhere to the ways of the past.
In my book, The Violent Potter, I described the story of Sona. She's a harried teenager and she's on someone's radar.
We are all easily on people's radars
- walk a path alone
- have friends or siblings who inadvertently create access
- house may not have good security systems
- young person staying alone
- whoever is in the house all day easily opens the door without checking who is at the door
Until we become conscious of it. And panic.
But the person who is watching/ tracking us has all the motivations of a predator. Possibly, a predator with more than easy access to violent porn on the mobile phone.
