On February 26th a Belarusian partisan group, BYPOL, and opposition leaders claimed a Russian A-50 airborne early warning & control aircraft had been damaged in a UAV attack
Bellingcat has now obtained satellite imagery from after the alleged attack of the Machulishchy Airbase.
The .5m resolution imagery was captured on Feb 28th by @planet. It shows an aircraft with the same configuration as an A-50 with a dark mottled pattern on the wings.
But to assess the claims of BYOP, it is first important to compare the latest image with others captured earlier.
An aircraft matching the A-50 configuration was captured by @Planet in .5m resolution imagery on Feb 19th (left) and 3m resolution imagery on Feb 23rd (right) – both before the apparent attack.
Compared to the earlier Feb 19th image (right) there does appear to be a difference in the colour of the wings.
However, this might be snowfall on the surface of the aircraft and it is as yet not possible to verify the BYPOL claims.
We will continue to update this thread with more information as it becomes available.
Correction, BYPOL, not BYOP.
Maxar has also made imagery available, which provides a slightly higher resolution image of the aircraft.
Imagery from March 1st (right) shows the aircraft has moved from the position it was seen on Feb 28th (left)
March 1st imagery shows the aircraft has been moved a short distance away. It's unclear if that was under its own power.
BYPOL has released a clip of drone footage showing the lead up to the attack, promising more footage of the attack later. The position of the aircraft is consistent with February 28th satellite imagery
The drone flies in this direction towards the A50 parked at the airbase.
BYPOL has now posted the full video online. Importantly in the attached statement they only state the drone entered the airbase and landed on the A-50. It does not mention an attack or explosions. t.me/bypol/622

A year has passed since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. From playgrounds, to post offices and bus stops, it’s wrought death and destruction well beyond the front lines. Daily life as usual is shattered. bellingcat.com/news/2023/02/2…
Over the past year, Bellingcat and @bellingcatgap have been working to geolocate and confirm incidents of civilian harm in Ukraine. Our project recently confirmed its 1,000th incident.
@bellingcatgap Our interactive TimeMap, which can be accessed below, includes links to hundreds of cases of civilian deaths and damage to crucial infrastructure across Ukraine observed since February 24, 2022. ukraine.bellingcat.com
@bellingcatgap The Ukraine TimeMap has proven useful for assessing the sheer scale of damage and potential war crime incidents that have taken place in Ukraine.
@bellingcatgap While not every incident is a war crime, all our data is saved and archived forensically. The data serves as a jumping off point for our editorial team and our justice & accountability unit, the latter of which conducts investigations to a legal standard bellingcat.com/what-is-bellin…
Nativist militias have set up camp alongside the US-Mexico border to intercept migrants heading north. A series of videos shows one group has even entered Mexico on ‘undercover operations’. bellingcat.com/news/2023/02/2…
One such group is the Arizona-based ‘Veterans on Patrol’ (VoP), founded as a support network for ex-military personnel. @splcenter writes that Christian nationalism and nativism have become central tenets of their worldview. splcenter.org/fighting-hate/…
By 2018, SPLC says, VoP shifted its focus to address trafficking of migrant children. This cause more recently attracted extremists & conspiracists, such as QAnon supporters who headed to the border. Members have also been seen wearing QAnon T-shirts. nytimes.com/2022/05/09/us/…
For months, Wagner scoured Russian prisons for convicts willing to fight in Ukraine in exchange for a pardon. They recruited more than petty thieves -- here are the stories of three criminal kingpins from the 1990s who didn't survive to see freedom. bellingcat.com/news/2023/02/1…
Most first heard about Wagner's recruitment efforts in Russian prisons after a video emerged of the PMC's founder speaking at a prison in Yoshkar Ola. Reportedly, he has gathered over a hundred inmates in many of these visits across Russia through the summer of last year.
It is not clear exactly how many fighters are with Wagner and how many prisoners they have recruited, but a few estimates from NGOs and US/UK intelligence put it at around 40-50k. It's very possible these numbers are inflated, but regardless -- there are a lot of them in Ukraine.
Isabel dos Santos appeared in two TV interviews in November after reports emerged an Interpol Red Notice had been issued for her provisional arrest. She was coy when asked about her location, but has been far more forthcoming on social media. bellingcat.com/news/2023/02/0…
Dos Santos is the central figure of the Luanda Leaks - a trove of leaked documents - that exposed decades of confidential business dealings leading to accusations of fraud and embezzlement and freezing of a billion dollars worth of assets worldwide. bbc.com/news/world-afr…
Dos Santos maintains she made her money through legitimate business endeavours and denies accusations of fraud and embezzlement. She has described the Luanda Leaks as “without substance” and the government’s charges as a political “witch hunt”. icij.org/investigations…
