Today marks 30 years since the Feds chose violence and began the siege of the Mount Carmel compound in #Waco, Texas. The siege, chosen in favor of simply arresting David Koresh outside, resulted in almost 100 dead and dozens of children burned alive. @FBI@ATFHQ#weaponization
@FBI@ATFHQ Congress missed a crucial opportunity to reign in weaponized federal law enforcement.
Notably, the Congressional investigation cost up to $12 million dollars (unadjusted for inflation), which is almost 6 times the size of the current Weaponization Sub Committee's budget.
Chief amongst the Congressional defenders of the Feds "burn the children alive" strategy were none other than @SenSchumer and @JoeBiden
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Machine politics. Algorithms, donor lists, federally and privately funded NGO involvement, corrupt ties with industry, captured media, suppression propaganda, and especially ballot harvesting all unfortunately matter more than a true democracy in which policy is debated.
Some causes for optimism but many more areas for concern. One historical reference could be that Harry Truman (Senator from Pendergrast) was put into the Senate by corrupt machine politics. FDR picked him as his running mate (didn't even really talk to him before or after much)
because his current VP (Wallace) was too obviously a communist. Truman was unable to unwilling to recognize the extent to which communist forces were driving the FDR administration. The consequences of that still hurt us today and color a lot of our FP.
