These two pieces from Gangaram’s chronicles of the Maratha Bargees depicts what started as a competition between two

Maratha Mansabdars over sphere of influence and right to collect Chauth on behalf of the Mughal Empire in the name of Shah Alam soon devolve into one of the worst genocide and mass destruction in Eastern India south of Hoogley river and around Midnapore-Cuttack region ironically

affecting the Bengali Hindu population the most and were it not for Alivardi’s interception they would have simply ceased from existence

And yet today we see these same namak harams abuse their lord and saviour Nawab Alivardi and very often literally sing songs in praise of

their ®@Pist Cha-Mars

This thread is exclusively focused on highlighting the episode of Maratha involvement in Bengal frontiers and it's effects plus the fallacy of le Bahmaniputra being “Dhorma Rokshok”

𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕘𝕖:

Following the battle of Giria on 9th April of 1740 Alivardi killed Nawab Sharfaraz and ascended the masnaad of Bangla, Bihar and Odisha but the deputy governor of Odisha Rustam Jung and his son in law Mirza Baqer refused to accept his authority and kept

launching war of attrition, forcing the Nawab to carry out extensive counter strikes to quell rebellion in Odisha putting toll on his health and economy

And if that wasn't enough Raghuji Bhosale in competition with the Peshwas of Pune was seeking to expand his mansabdaaris

sphere of influence and the right to collect Chauth in the name of emperor Shah Alam

Opportunity came to him when the baghis(rebels) who were loyal to late Nawab Sharfaraz gave him the golden ticket to raid into Alivardis masnaad which was increasingly becoming rouge from Delhi

and on top of that Alivardi was overdue on giving Chauth

And with the permission of the emperor of Delhi through Sahu’s patronage the ground work was laid for the upcoming rumbling which is still remembered in the form of poem;

“খোকা ঘুমালো, পাড়া জুড়ালো, বর্গি এল দেশে।

বুলবুলিতে ধান খেয়েছে খাজনা দেব কিসে?
ধান ফুরল, পান ফুরল, খাজনার উপায় কী?
আর ক’টা দিন সবুর কর রসুন বুনেছি।।
ধনিয়া পিঁয়াজ গেছে পচে সর্ষে ক্ষেতে জল।
খরা-বন্যায় শেষ করিল বর্ষার ফসল।।
ধানের গোলা, চালের ঝুড়ি সব শুধু খালি।
ছিন্ন কাপড় জড়িয়ে গায়ে শত শত তালি।”

𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕆𝕟𝕤𝕝𝕒𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥 𝕓𝕖𝕘𝕚𝕟𝕤 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝔸𝕝𝕚𝕧𝕒𝕣𝕕𝕚𝕤 𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕡𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕖

Following the invitation from the renegade family of Rustam Jang and defection of Mir Habib the onslaught began from 1741 to 1751 decimating everything west of Hoogley River except Kolkata which

is well described by Vaneshwar Vidyalankar, the court Pandit of the Maharaja of Bardwan as;

“Shahu Raja’s troops are niggard of pity, slayers of pregnant women and infants, of Brahmans and the poor, fierce of spirit, expert in robbing the property of every one and committing

every kind of sinful act.”

The atrocities of the Bargees was so extreme that despite Bhaskar Pandit’s show-off by arranging a Durga Puja the native Bhramins and Pujaris praised Alivardi for defeating the Maratha raiders whenever he met them at Katwa and Burdawan

And these so called “Dharma Rakshaks” were not just notorious for decimating the economic infrastructure but so devoid of humanity they carried out vivid ozymandian scale of mass killing, rapes and looting forcing hundreds and thousands of primarily Hindu Bengalis to seek shelter

in Kolkata(protected by the Marhatta Ditch which is now the present Circular Road of Kolkata) and east of Ganges(which was still under the firm control of Muslims)

Contemporary Dutch account attest the casaulties to be around 400,000 which ironically shifted the balance of

demography in Bengali Muslims favour and still somehow these stockholm syndrome patients have the audacity to celebrate these Luteras

Anyways fortunately Nawab Alivardi despite his old age clashed with them bravely and at one point retook Odisha after series of

dog fights only for the Marhattas to come back looting and dissapearing

Atlast in 1751 Alivardi came to negotiations with the Mansabdar of Nagpur to give up half of Odisha(though retaining the right to appoint governors till 1760 after which Marathas themselves started

appointing their own governor and the irony is, the governor of Hindu Odisha which was under Bhosales happened to be a.... Muslim

After Mir Habib was assassinated for not leeching off Odisha and filling the Coffers of Nagpur he was replaced by... A Muslim

..heheheheh...

“Dharamyoddha” my ass

Not only did Raghuji Bhosale allied with Mir Habib and gave him a province on platter(the South and Central Odisha, North still remained with Bengal Nawabate till EIC usurped it)

But for failing to loot Hindu majority Odisha Bhosales had him assassinated

And though Alivardi aged and near crippling showed extreme resilience and managed to save Bengal and North Odisha for time being

Rest of Hindu Majority Odisha under Marhattas would be reduced to nothing more than a lootbazar

Even now they associate anarchy and oppression

to “Maratha Amal”

And now we shall end this thread by pointing out some key notes to be observed

ℕ𝕠𝕥𝕖𝕤:

(01) Raghuji Bhosale was drawn to invading Bengal with the main goal for Chauth in the name of emperor Muhammad Shah(I mistakenly wrote Shah Alam)

as mentioned by S.N Sen, Jadunath and R.C Majumdar

(02) The marauding army had prominent Muslims like Mir Habib who was directly supported by Raghuji

(03) Prime benefactors were ironically Muslims, prime victims were Bengali and Odian Hindus

(04) Odisha was equally divided

between Marhattas and Nawabate before British usurped the said Nawabate

(05) Marhattas clearly didn't gave a damn about Dharma and were satisfied with Hafta Vasuli

(06) As William Dalrymple, a Scottish historian in his book “Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India

rightfully pointed out that Marhattas relied on vampire economy alienating their own allies

And we can see this in the case of Nagpur’s incursion into Bengal Subah

(07) Even Bhramins praised Alivardi to the point of saying Ma Durga favoured the Nawab against the Marhattas
