For the record, the first “off topic” comments this morning were about gender affirming care and were brought up by Sen Kauth “correcting the record” based on Sen Hunts statement that “8 yr olds aren’t getting surgery.” Kauth’s referencing a 21 yr old who received care.
Question: apparently Senator Kauth is open to reading Nebraskans experiences and testimonies on the mic. Pretty interesting since she won’t even meet one on one in private with families with trans children who are begging to share their story.
(For the record, I have NO PROBLEM w/ Kauth sharing whatever she likes. Completely disagree w/ what she says but she has the right to say it & I’ll defend her right to do so when people inevitably attack her for being off topic/wasting time like folks did at Hunt/MCav last week)
Wow. Senator @JaneRaybould came to play today. “Does the legislation make Nebraskans safer?” Yes, yes, yes. This is a question that should be asked of EVERY bill but especially gun legislation.
I always find it really interesting when Senator’s get really mad and worked up for no other reason than the fact people disagree with them. Sen Brewer is very mad that Sen Raybould is reading the names of the victims from the Von Maur shooting. Those are just facts?
Senator McDonnell supports LB77. Shocked. I’m shocked, I tell you.
Sen JCav brings up that the amendment is actually being discussed which makes significant changes including the creation of new misdemeanors. Emphasize that with that significant a change, it needs a public hearing before being considered on the floor.
Sen Raybould clarified that the Omaha Police DEPARTMENT and the Lincoln police DEPARTMENT oppose the bill. The police union and sheriffs’ organization may differ but the departments themselves oppose. This is an incredibly important point.
Senator Brewer referred to the protests in Lincoln during the “George Floyd…incident.” I believe the word you are looking for is “murder,” the George Floyd murder.
Senator @SenMcKinneyLD11 brings up the fact that having constitutional carry could potentially mean fewer black and brown individuals being charged which is a really important point. I’m genuinely interested in what he thinks about the newly introduced amendment.
Senator @JohnforNE is giving us a history lesson in NE gun policy (apparently LD20 reps have been on this for awhile) and carefully laying out the cost-benefit analysis of lawful access to firearms vs harm, specifically crimes of passion and suicide.
(Side note, @JohnforNE is my rep. It’s ok to be jealous because he is as awesome as he seems on public media😊)
Senator @George4NE gives a quick overview of the history and evolution of how the second amendment has been interpreted, specifically how the individual (v collective) right evolved in the 1800s.
Also used the word “tome” so bonus points for that.
Senator Raybould clarifies for the record (because a constituent emailed saying they could) you CANNOT BUY OR OWN A TANK. Also grenades. Can’t have those either. Just so we are clear.
“Don’t do bad things with guns and bad things won’t happen to you” - Senator Brewer
😒
Yet another blaring statement that reiterates how much we need @SenMcKinneyLD11’s bill on racial impact statements.
I found some data for you, Sen Slama, that goes beyond those pesky individual 20,000 children that die by gun violence every year in the US and all those silly emotions their friends and families will grapple with for the rest of their lives but I digress, do you need more data?
Adjourned until tomorrow at nine. Busy day this afternoon for hearings voter ID in government, LGBTQ rights in judiciary and Health and Human Services. nebraskalegislature.gov/calendar/heari…
Says one of their biggest challenges is to recruit and retain diverse talent. Recent attempt by UP to promote someone which would bring them to Omaha and they said "No, I don't feel welcome in Nebraska."
"This is a common sense solution to a problem we all recognize." Well said, @jacob_p_car
Listening to the LB169 hearing is giving me hope. 3 of the first 4 testifiers clearly established white business men have taken to the mic to talk about the importance of welcoming LGBTQ Nebraskans. Thank you so much for speaking - your voices are needed, just like everyone else!
Great testimony by @jaydenlspeed! Thank you so much for sharing a real world example of what we all know (and good luck with your college decision!)
Good Lord (no pun intended), as a former Catholic, I want to apologize for all the horribly discriminatory, anti-science, hateful testimony that is being given by the NE Catholic Church today in the #NELeg. It's not new but it will never not be jarring to me.
Twist: the candidate who lost to Senator Hunt in November is here testifying against a bill from Senator Hunt. 👀
If I'm hearing this right, one of the biggest issues with 169 is that people will have to use people's preferred pronouns or...they go to jail?
Senator @senatorblood asks a testifier how is discrimination based on race or disability any different than sexual orientation/gender identity based her argument of "creed"
Her response "no, because that's not all in your head"
Thank you, Sen Blood for quickly correcting that
(FYI, this hearing is going about how you think it would be)
Testifier asks "is anyone being attacked on the street because of their gender orientation? Of course not!"
It's official: LB574 (anti-gender affirming care) and LB626 (abortion ban) have been placed on General File #NELeg
Looks like the committee statement for LB626 is now available. Here is the link and I'll post screenshots of the proponents and oppoennts nebraskalegislature.gov/FloorDocs/108/…
First day post 626 & 574 being voted out of committee. Apparently neither was discussed at all. None of the opposition was addressed. The 3+hrs on both or almost 1,000 comments.
Not even discussed. @senatormachaela is telling us all about it.
Senator @senatorblood takes the opportunity to talk about medical marijuana, sharing the story of a recent info gathering visit to CBD store. She says in the time that the #NELeg has been fighting MM, the CBD industry has run rampant with legitimately dangerous products
Her point: the Legislature has been so focused on the political perception of an issue that they've totally missed and/or ignored real problems.
I think that about sums up this session. Maybe even the whole institution post last election.
