π¨π EVERYTHING ABOUT COLORING AND SHADING: a thread!
I'll try to fit as much of the basics as I can, but there's still a lot you can learn after this ଲ(β Ο β)ଲ
I'll link some cool resources at the end! as much as I wanted to talk about /actually/ everything, I also need to take care of my sanity ππ
βοΈ STYLES: no tutorial or guide can fit every style out there! but you can learn to adapt advice to fit your work ;D
βοΈ TECHNIQUES: you might categorize these differently π€
βοΈ BRUSHES: they're pretty necessary! but not THATT necessary. but also pretty helpful. but they don't do all the work. you get what I'm saying?
βοΈ COLORS: having good colors is SUUCHH an investment.... you can have the best artstyle in the world, but if the colors/values are lacking, you'll have a hard time making it look pretty!
BY THE WAAAYYY!! saturated colors are not bad by default! you just need to use them with >>intention<<
making a stylistic choice on purpose is very different from doing it on accident! you should try new things and not excuse your shortcomings by claiming it's your artstyle!
people complain about it because saturated colors, when used improperly, can cause eyestrain and make the artwork look unfocused. if it's what you want to do, learn how to do it well!
same with the airbrush tool, shading with black, using pastels, using filters, etc
βοΈ COLOR HIERARCHY: this is usually taught in the context of graphic design (that's how I learned it) but it's EXTREMELY important in illustration and character design as well!!! I'm shocked that I hardly see people mention it in tutorials..?
βοΈ SHADING TIME!!
I think knowing the basics of light, shadow, painting, etc is important no matter what your style is. even if you don't apply it all the time, it really helps you reach your potential!
βοΈ SHADING FUNDAMENTALS: ball and cat examples. ΓΌ
βοΈ BOUNCE LIGHT: also called 'ambient light'! or it's something else completely and I got them mixed up! either way, very fun.
βοΈ STUDY: I think studying colors/painting is extremely fun γΎ(=`ΟΒ΄=)γβ
the most effective art study method for me has been the 'shrimp method' (prrb.tumblr.com/post/301777904β¦) where you draw something without ref, then with ref, then without ref again, then you revise it with ref, and I CAN'T REALLY EXPLAIN IT HERE so do read the original post!
βοΈ AND WE'RE DONE βοΈ thank you so much for reading! this took a while to put together ^^
my ko-fi also has my other guides (for free) and an art commissions pack in the shop section! :D ty again for reading!
btw it's completely justified to feel upset when your art doesn't do well online
(...short thread because I wanna elaborate on that a bit)
I understand the "numbers don't matter. you should only draw for yourself!" sentiment, but I personally think that art isn't /exclusively/ a form of self-expression, but usually also made to be experienced and shared. you expect it to reach others, right?
so you aren't wrong for feeling hurt when something you put effort and passion into doesn't reach the audience you intended it to. you aren't doing art wrong for wanting it to be seen. it's not that you're obsessed with numbers, it's that you want your work to+
HELLOOO it's been a while because I've been busy π but I've been organizing myself better and hopefully I'll get to post more! yay! γΎ(=`ΟΒ΄=)γβ
I want to preface by saying it's important for everyone to understand that some artists are forced to undercharge because it's either that, or not having food on the table. that's why it's important to be kind and understanding instead of shocked and aggressive when+
π§ͺπΈ HOW TO GROW ON SOCIAL MEDIA AS AN ARTIST: a thread!
I'll be giving you some tips about social media based on my own experiences and research!
of course, I still have a lot to learn and I don't really consider myself a big artist, but hopefully this can give you some direction!
π LOOK AT WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING: there's a lot you can learn from people who came before you! social media is a very specific environment and having a strategy helps a lot.
thank you so much for the support on my last thread!! :D I'm beyond happy! I don't expect this one to get the same amount of attention, but I worked really hard on it and I hope it's helpful :] β‘
