A 🧵explaining why everevery Oklahoman should vote NO on SQ820.
I was born in OK, but spent the majority of my adult life in CO before moving back 8 years ago. We voted to legalize marijuana in CO because we were promised tax revenue would fund public schools, support & fix infrastructure & make a beautiful state even better. We were lied to.
1: You can already obtain a medical marijuana license for many ailments, including but not limited to anxiety, OCD, etc. The tax affixed to medical marijuana is 7% in Oklahoma. SQ820 will raise the tax affixed to legal sales to 15%.
2: The 15% sales tax makes legal sells unaffordable, resulting in illegal dealers drastically increasing their prices. (In CO we were promised it would fund public schools & rehab, as they are here. It did not. It gave the government more power. The same power it gave them to… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
3: In CO, we witnessed many ppl who relied on pot to function have to switch to hard drugs b/c they could no longer afford it legally or illegally. Many died. Legalizing will harm children who can no longer afford to experiment. They will also turn to hard drugs as an… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
4: SQ820 prohibits courts from considering abuse of marijuana in child custody & visitation cases. OK averages reporting one marijuana overdose a day for children under 5 years old. Other states have seen these numbers triple when adding recreational. Child overdoses will be more… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
5: OK already has more licensed marijuana dispensaries (2,545) than CO (544) & CA (913) combined. SQ820 expressly removes the smoking or use of marijuana around children as a cause of child endangerment AND prohibits courts from considering marijuana use in child custody cases.
6: Regarding local Ag: Foreign nationals are purchasing OK farm land illegally, bringing in labor & sex trafficking. Our rural farmers & communities are suffering. Marijuana grow facilities have emerged by the thousands, placing a significant strain on rural Oklahoma’s utility… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
7a: SQ788 legalized the licensed cultivation, use, & possession of marijuana for medicinal purposes. It required a state-issued medical marijuana license to have a board-certified physician's signature. It required no specific qualifying conditions to receive medical marijuana.
7b: The measure allowed people with licenses to possess up to 3 ounces of marijuana on their person and 8 ounces of marijuana in their residence. The measure prohibited municipalities from restricting zoning laws to prevent marijuana dispensaries.
8: Every state that has legalized marijuana deteriorated rapidly following legalization. This includes but certainly isn't limited to increased homelessness, increased crime, legalizing other drugs, fentanyl overdoses...etc. (Oregon, CA, Washington, MA, NY, Colorado, etc.)
9: Colorado got comfortable with cannabis, the stakes raised and now it's onto psilocybin and currently discussing safe places to do heroin. No end in sight.
10: In CO, there are numerous reports of violence at cannabis shops. Several security guards have been shot, one killed. Armed robberies are common b/c of the amount of cash on hand. Unfortunately, marijuana has proven to be a breeding ground for other illegal activities.
VOTE NO ON SQ820

Every Oklahoman needs to understand what will become of our state if marijuana is legalized. Let’s first start with links to crime rates and criminal activity following the legalization of marijuana in Colorado:
L9:

*Oklahoma hasn’t yet legalized marijuana, but the same criminal activity is already occurring here.

If you read about the effect on crime, many reports are positive. One has to take into account that marijuana possession was no longer criminalized, so the criminal activity was no longer reported. It was no longer a crime.
Now let’s about marijuana as a “gateway drug”.

SQ820 is a bait and switch by the government. All you need to do is look at the states which have made recreational marijuana legal. How are they faring?
Where’s the money that was promised to go to education in those states? Where is the money that was promised to go for rehab? Why is mental health declining?

Don’t allow yourselves to be swayed by false promises that will only harm our great state.
