It's 5 years since the Skripal poisonings in Salisbury, and, for Bellingcat, the first in a series of investigations that would eventually lead to uncovering more than a dozen assassination attempts by the Russian state. We started here: bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
The investigations, led by @christogrozev, were a gradual learning process for us. As we poked different parts of the Russian machine we discovered more holes and exploits that we built on to find more and more information and uncover more plots. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
The first clue came from events that took place in Montenegro two years earlier, where a Russian spy was arrested with two IDs, one real, one fake, that shared the same first name, place of birth, and date of birth. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
Think Russian society has better things to worry about than stupid moral panics about teenagers? Think again! Meet "PMC Ryodan", the Anime obsessed teens that's got the Kremlin worried.
“PMC Ryodan” became the subject of media attention after police detained teenagers following brawls in shopping malls in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
One group involved with the brawls were long-haired anime enthusiasts who donned black hoodies, while members of the other group appeared to favour wearing Adidas tracksuits.
Because Russia has a long track record for using ceasefires to prepare for future offensives, it's like their most common play. Russia needs to pull all its forces out of the Donbas and Crimea for there to be a real peace, either by choice or by force.
At best you can accuse the #stopthewar movement of stunning naivete when it comes to any sort of peace process with Russia that starts by leaving Russian forces inside Ukraine. Until they start saying Russia must withdraw, their proposals are worthless & would only extend the war
It's clear Russia won't withdraw, and obvious to anyone who pays attention Ukraine understands a ceasefire will just be used by Russia to reinforce, so neither side wants peace on terms the other side is willing to accept, so these speeches are just empty rhetoric.
While today might be the 1 year anniversary of Russia's "official" invasion of Ukraine, lets not forget this started back in 2014, when Russia started to send Russian troops and military equipment into Ukraine, and fired artillery from Russia into Ukraine.
We spent years at Bellingcat documenting Russia's involvement in Ukraine, starting with MH17, but also documenting Russian troops, armoured vehicles and artillery attacks in Ukraine.
It's good to see open source investigation now being used by all sorts of organisations, and that its become an essential part of understanding the conflict, but had it been taken more seriously years ago maybe we wouldn't be in the situation we're in today.
Evidence, if evidence were needed, that Hersh has absolutely no way to respond to evidence he's wrong without saying it's just part of the conspiracy. Here's what we know so far about the holes in his story, using evidence, not secret sources: oalexanderdk.substack.com/p/blowing-hole…
