THREAD: Wheeling City Council Holds Contentious Meeting— Resolution Re-Affirming the Civil Rights of Wheeling Residents rejected 3-3. Here are the highlights.
I WILL BE GOING OUT OF CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. Spiciest stuff first. Before we start- 1) security checks were held, 2) @MayorWheeling was absent, 3) out of the three meetings I’ve reported on not ONE has had full attendance of the #citycouncil. Roughly 20 citizens in attendance
2/15
A Resolution to Re-Affirm the civil rights of Wheeling residents was offered. This is in response to the WV Leg passing HB 3042, RFRA. Councilor @benseidler spoke in opposition, upset that the resolution was “dropped in our laps” 24 hours ago.
3/15
Councilor @benseidler also claimed this was a “political stunt” by “far-left” members of the council. The Wheeling city council is non-partisan. Seidler went on to excoriate the “far-right” and “republicans” who he said “spread their hate more than the other side.”
4/15
*personal note* I want to commend Councilor @benseidler for this. Speaking truth to the “misinformation and hate” (his words) from some who support him is great. Seidler disavowed these individuals in no uncertain terms.
5/15
Councilor Palmer opposed saying the Council should “stay in their lane” and not buck the State Leg. Councilor @RosemaryKetchum and Vice Mayor @ViceMayorWhg spoke in support. Councilor Ketchum said cities like Wheeling should offer hope to those who feel not welcome in WV
6/15
At the end of the meeting citizens were heard. Who I call “C” is a known agitator in Wheeling. She went on a stream of consciousness style rant full of attacks and social media drama. She attacked the dine-in protest at Primati’s after a cancelled drag show
7/15
She then attacked Councilor @RosemaryKetchum referring to her as “you people” and “little girl.” It was nasty. It was painful to witness, and I can only imagine painful for Councilor Ketchum to receive.
8/15
“C” went on to talk about threats she received after speaking out against the Primanti Bros Drag Queen event. She read posts she claims she received including “C, your Jesus was a drag Queen,” and one saying they should have a drag Queen event in her yard.
9/15
Worth nothing as well, “C” claimed she feared for her life while attending City Council meetings. At the end of the meeting she got within inches of a resident’s face, screaming at her. Stark contrast to how she spoke about the “fear” she felt.
10/15
The resolution to re-affirm the civil rights of Wheeling residents failed on a vote of 3-3, Palmer, Sklavounakis, and @benseidler voting in the negative. It is important to note this was symbolic— non discrimination ordinances were NOT affected
11/15
March was announced in honor of social service providers and workers. It was also noted a college basketball tournament held this weekend saw Grenville State Women’s and West Liberty Men’s teams winning.
12/15
The council also adopted resolutions 1) creating a no-parking zone in North Wheeling, 2) transferring land of OVMC from the city to WVU Medicine, and 3) $35,000 in additional funding to the new Wheeling Police Department.
13/15
New resolutions offered and voted on include 1) a 78-acre lease to SWN productions for oil, gas, and mineral extraction— no debate was held, 2) exempting businesses in downtown from licensing fees due to the impact of the Streetscape project
14/15

So sorry for the delayed thread— a dear friend who is leaving town came to say goodbye. We hadn’t spoken for a couple months and they are moving from Wheeling! Really care for this person and wanted to spend as much time with them as possible.
Please SHARE parts of that thread. Many important stories that shouldn’t be buried! The nastiness of this council meeting was unlike anything I had seen. Personal attacks against any Councilor should not be accepted.
No comment from citizens. Wanted comment from the Counsilors but many left immediately— unusual for most post-adjournments and likely due to C’s rant. Pretty sure her and her friends said something about me as I walked out. Probably because I busted out laughing when C spoke
Hey! Do you work for an equitable organization looking for a self-motivated, passionate worker with years of demonstrated skills in leadership, team work, public speaking, relationship building, and community engagement I'm your man! I come with bonus farming knowledge!
I have 3+ years experience with people aged 7 to 21, from five to twenty people, on community cleanup tasks, cooking classes, farm-related tasks etc. I have created content for these work and volunteer groups, lead their activities, and coordinated with coworkers to achieve this

I noticed this when East Palestine train derailment happened- an influx of right-wing conspiracy theorists. That’s when I first heard of “smart cities.” This is the comment section of a recent “RAW Alerts” tweet. The account attracts many of these conspiracies.
Some very suspect things happening on this platform, as we’re all aware. Not sure what we do to combat such viral misinformation and conspiracy web spinning. In my opinion this is a bad omen
This account posts a lot of stories that don’t receive coverage, but it’s also clearly a hot bed for right-wing agitators. How any new source claiming to be reputable would allow these conspiracies to flourish without putting a statement out in opposition is beyond me.
My HS marching band went to Disney a week after the 2014 Charleston water crisis and we kept joking when we saw Woody we’d say “WOODY! Someone poisoned our waterhole!” Or we’d say “hope this water isn’t poison” before drinking at restaurants. We were 15-17 y/o
Honorable mention is this hilarious ride photo where I’m literally not paying attention to the jump scare lmao. Can’t stop laughing at this.
I look very concerned in every photo I took from the rides because I WAS. Not a thrill seeker. I went on these rides because if I left my group and got caught I’d have to spend the trip with the BAND MOMS. Lasted until they tried to do the Tower of Terror twice, NOPE.
Going through my Instagram now feeling nostalgic. Pic on left is me in Cardiff, Wales, about to vote in my first U.S. General Election. Right is me with Sec Tennant before I left. In 2016 I was (I think) the only person to vote via email in WV. It was a pilot program!
Scrolled to high school times…. BRO. I forgot something hit me senior year and I started taking costume days SO SERIOUSLY. (1) DEAD JOAN RIVERS, (2) Voltaire, (3) “throwback Thursday,” (4) tweedle Dee and tweedle dum
Coming out as gay in 7th grade and wearing makeup for 3 years really got everyone’s bullying out of their system I guess. By the time I’m a senior I’m straight cross dressing and no one (to my face) said a single word lol
Excited for Legislature chaos to end so around May I can try and get interviews with Del Fluharty and Sen Chapman. Maybe Sen Weld too but I know far less about him than the two from my county
Inbefore something crazy happens and the Leg goes into special session for months and every capitol beat reporter lives their own personal Groundhog Day hell
Erica Storch, our neighboring district’s Del, I have spoken with before. Was at the Capitol to speak against proposed Cracker Plant across from Moundsville. Was impressed with how receptive she was. Spoke with Fluharty while there in 2020 as well.
