Every time Melanie Martinez has been very heavily inspired by Björk, an ongoing thread 🧵🪡
Disclaimer - this is not in reference to either of their music, Melanie has only plagiarized Björk's visuals and concepts. Björk makes experimental electropop and Melanie makes mainstream pop, no similarity.
Firstly, the cover for Melanie's upcoming album "Portals" was was very very heavily inspired by the cover of Björk's 2022 album "Fossora"
A short video uploaded that Melanie uploaded tiktok is very clearly inspired by the music video for Björk's 2002 song "It's In Our Hands." She very clearly took direct inspiration from each individual frame.
The album cover is very clearly paying homage to Björk's 2017 album Utopia
Melanie's new album "Portals" explores the concept of reproduction and birth, a concept that Björk has been using in multiple of her albums since 2015's "Vulnicura" (The music video in the far right in the Björk picture is from the music video for her song Ovule, about ovulation)
Melanie has been a fan of Björk for years, so it would make sense for her to be inspired by her music and visuals. This is a video of Melanie dancing to Björk's songs "Crystalline (2011)" and "Blissing Me (2017)."
It is okay for her to be inspired by Björk, but it is important to give credit to those who inspire you, especially when you're referencing their work as much as Melanie is. Here is a picture Melanie posted to her story when she attended one of Björk's "Cornucopia" shows.
This is an ongoing thread, as Melanie's new era is still happening. I will continue to update this she releases more material that is inspired by Björk.
