PM in speech said Country Needs
Secular Civil Code and One Nation One Election
Secular Code is basically Uniform Civil Code
The idea of UCC is to promote equality and non-discrimination by ensuring that all citizens are governed by the same set of laws in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption. The Constitution, under Article 44, envisions the UCC as part of the Directive Principles of State Policy
The Supreme Court has called for the implementation of the UCC in several judgments.
In 1985 Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum case, where a divorced Muslim woman sought maintenance from her ex-husband, the Court highlighted the need for a UCC while deciding whether the CrPC or Muslim personal law should prevail.
The Court also urged the government to implement the UCC in the 1995 Sarla Mudgal case and the 2019 Paulo Coutinho vs Maria Luiza Valentina Pereira case.
The Law Commission's 2018 consultation paper on family law reform stated that a unified nation does not necessarily require "uniformity" and that secularism should not conflict with the country's diversity.
The report suggested that UCC "is neither necessary nor desirable at this stage" and recommended studying and amending discriminatory practices within personal law
One Nation, One Election
It means all Indians will vote in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections - to pick central and state representatives - in the same year, if not at the same time
A committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind submitted a report on the government's 'One Nation, One Election' push - which proposes simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.
The panel - set up in September - has since studied
best practices from other countries", consulted 39 political parties, economists, and the Election Commission of India. It said today it backs the idea, but calls for a legally sustainable mechanism that can break and re-align existing electoral cycles.
Benefits simultaneous elections
financial savings
it cuts down on deployment of poll officials and security forces several times each year
asynchronous polls meant the Code of Conduct remained in force frequently, which affects roll-out of welfare schemes, whether by the centre or a state.
one-shot election will improve voter turnouts, which, at present, vary significantly from state to state and even for the general election.
The 'One Nation, One Election' panel received nearly 21,000 suggestions from the public, of which over 81 per cent were in favour, news agency PTI said in January
Was going through Medeival History NCERT and found some very important information so taken SS and compiled them in thread below, short thread but very informative. Check the thread 🧵
