We believe the latest Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, UK’s post-Brexit replacement for Europe’s GDPR data regime, introduced yesterday by @michelledonelan, is worse than the previous one and puts data rights at severe risk.

Here’s why🧵#DPDIBill
Here we explained how the previous version was riddled with thorny issues and a business-centric approach that neglects data privacy and transparency

The government now says it has ‘co-designed the latest version of the bill with businesses and data experts”, and that it could save organisations in Britain £4.7bn over ten years.
gov.uk/government/new…
According to the gov, the new bill is aimed at maximising benefits for the UK economy while removing unnecessary admin and expenses.

The new regime is undoubtedly very popular among business leaders, since it waters down their responsibilities and accountability requirements.
DPDI removes GDPR's obligation for all businesses to keep data processing records. This requirement will now only apply to companies engaging in “high risk” activities, e.g. health data. The catch? They can figure out for themselves if their processing activities are “high risk”.
The latest draft of the DPDI Bill also redefines “scientific research” in relation to processing data as any processing that “could reasonably be described as scientific”. It means that businesses have the same leeway as academics to use your data.
It also expands the number of ‘legitimate interest provisions’ to legitimise a wide range of personal data usage.
More in general, the bill empowers the Secretary of State to amend primary legislation without meaningful accountability or democratic scrutiny.
Civil rights organisations and privacy activists fear that the new draft could further infringe on data protection rights, by removing protections and giving businesses more discretionary power on how they use personal information.

For example, DPDI lowers legal certainty over accountability requirements and the independence of Data Protection Officers, renamed Senior Responsible Individuals.
According to @burkeabigaile, policy manager at @OpenRightsGroup, the bill fails to address the privacy concerns raised by civil society Image
.@burkeabigaile also warns that #DPDIBill could harm businesses as it increases the risk of failing to meet EU adequacy requirements. The UK has a post-Brexit “data adequacy” agreement with the EU, but the EU can revoke it if UK data protections plummet
techmonitor.ai/policy/privacy…
We share these concerns.

This is why, with 25 other organisations, we signed an open letter to @michelledonelan asking the government to scrap the new #DPDIBill.

Take action to protect your data rights.

🚨 NEW 🚨

Requesting CCTV footage is just one of the many data rights the Uk government is threatening to destroy with its Data Protection and Digital Information Bill.

If you agree with us that data rights are human rights, join the fight.

A short film and a thread 👇
The Government is planning to lay out new proposals for data protection, with reports indicating that the Data Protection and Digital Reform Bill, currently before Parliament, is about to be stalled during this Parliamentary session.
On 18 July 2022, the Government introduced the Data Protection and Digital Information (DPDI) Bill, which would diverge EU GDPR with potentially massive ramifications for how personal data is processed in the UK. Among the changes were reforms to filing Subject Access Requests… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

We have serious concerns that DPDI will seriously weaken data protection rights in the UK, and harm… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
@michelledonelan The most recent version of the Bill contained many concerning and ill-considered proposals which endanger UK residents and UK data protection.

In recent months, a wave of legislation (related to protest, freedom of speech, and more) has attempted to consolidate power in the hands of the government and corporations at the expense of the rights of every day people.

🔴NEW: 9 Conservative Treasurers have Donated £34.5 Million to the Party, analysis reveals.

Recently appointed Conservative Party Treasurer, Graham Edwards, donated a huge £500,000 to the Central Party around the time of his appointment, Electoral Commission figures reveal.
He’s the latest in a string of Treasurers to have made large cash donations, often near the time of their appointment.

The last 9 treasurers have, since records began, donated nearly £34.5 million to the Conservatives.
His appointment was reported in mid-December, and the donation came on the 21st.

Edwards, the chair of Telereal Trillium, who also sits on the board of the Centre for Policy Studies, has donated over £1,441,104 to the Conservatives since 2018.

On 9 September 2019, @allthecitizens emailed the Cabinet press office asking if special advisers within No.10 were using Whatsapp or Signal to conduct government business.
What followed was a masterclass in obfuscation and stonewalling. ⬇️ the-citizens.com/2021/09/the-my…
The original request was denied on the grounds that it would “exceed costs” to retrieve the information, the second was deemed “invalid”. Subsequent requests were refused on the basis that ministries did not hold the information and that disclosure would present a security risk.
It was a blatant attempt to dodge accountability, the modern equivalent of shredding vital documents.
This is why we took the government to court over their use of 'disappearing Whatsapp messages" with legal firm @Foxglove

@r_borisovich @margarethodge On the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we look at why tackling Russian #dirtymoney is paramount.

Here is @margarethodge + cross-party group of MPs explaining why this matters
'It is unusual indeed in a major international crisis for a journalist to be the one briefing law enforcement about what the problem is.'

Here's @OliverBullough on #Kleptotours highlighting UK law enforcement's blindspot towards Russian interference

God save us from Boris Johnson becoming PM again.

Your thoughts?
Under Boris Johnson, the Tories covered up the damning findings of the Russia report and dodged questions about their Russian benefactors
the-citizens.com/2022/02/conser…
Boris Johnson was also instrumental in facilitating the extraordinary rise of Evgeny Lebedev, his close friend and the son of a former Russian spy
