Alright. POKER FACE! This is it. Episode 10, The Hook. Written by me. This is the first thing I have ever gotten made that I’ve written and not directed, and I was very lucky to have the amazing Janicza Bravo at the helm. I learned so much watching her work. Image
The episode was shot by @jaronpresant who along with Christine Ng did the lord’s work all season. Edited by @glenngar who also has a terrific podcast where he interviews editors, check it out! This is a photo I took of Jaron. Man can wear a hat. Image
Tangent: the email chain with all the departments cc’d where we dialed in the design of the dick ring is an epic piece of literature and will hopefully be published by Taschen one day Image
Ron Perlman is the man. Not much else to say about that. Just the coolest dude on the planet. Look at the stone cold coolness represented at this table. No ice required in those drinks. Image
I love this beautiful man so much. When I hired Benjamin Bratt for the pilot I convinced him to do it by pitching him the finale, and oh my god he devours this ep. Giving him room to run after the whole season felt so good. Image
Was very happy to have the great @simonhelberg back, a great actor and true hero for wearing a three piece suit in the summer in upstate NY. And I was over the moon to have Rhea Perlman join us. She rules. We have not seen (heard?) the last of Beatrix Hasp. Image
Maybe my favorite scenes in the whole show are the ones with @cleaduvall and @nlyonne. Working with friends you go back with is always the best, and these two going head to head was really beautiful to watch. Image
Tangent: my personal Poker Face playlist. Lots of stuff that ended up in the show and other stuff that just had the right travels-with-Charlie vibe. open.spotify.com/playlist/62kSU…
One last shout out to our production designer Judy Rhee, our costume designer @TrayceGigiField, props master Duke Scoppa, our hair maestro Marcel “the shell with shoes on” Dagenais and makeup magician Amy Forsythe. And our whole NY crew. Heroes all. Image
Massive love to our incredible showrunners @NoraZuckerman & @lillazuck, our incredible room of writers, all our directors and Iain B. MacDonald our fabulous producing director. ImageImage
And much love to our stunt coordinator Thomas Place, and especially to stunt artist extraordinaire Becca GT. Image
Lastly and opposite of least, it’s been one of the great pleasures of my life to be friends and collaborators with @nlyonne. That we built this thing together is cool, that we got to hang out and have the best time doing it, that’s as good as it gets. ♥️ Image
I’ve got a cool little video of the last shot, I’ll post it separately so it doesn’t get buried in this thread. Thanks for watching and spreading the word all season, love you guys. Till S2… POKER FACE! Image

POKER FACE! Ep 2: The Night Shift. Directed by myself, written by the immensely talented Alice Ju, who worked with Natasha on Russian Doll. Hi Alice! Image
One of my first ideas after the pilot was a highway rest stop, and the mini culture of the businesses there. We shot just outside of Albuquerque. Judy Rhee and her team completely built the subway and the garage portion of Abe’s (!!!) Image
Not only was the subway not product placement, but we had to beg them to let us use their logos in the ep. Probably because of the, uh, murder. I was really into having it be a real chain you’d hit on a road trip and not a movie-fied one. Image

POKER FACE! Episode 1: Dead Man’s Hand. I wrote and directed this episode, actually wrote the script in 2020 right before I wrote Glass Onion. I wanted to not only set up Charlie, but clearly demonstrate the structure each ep would stick to going forward.
For weird reasons this was the 2nd episode we shot, the first was episode 9 (which I also directed.) We shot all the interiors in upstate NY, all the casino interiors are sets by our BRILLIANT production designer Judy Rhee. Hi Judy!
We shot our exteriors at the very end of our schedule, nearly 6 months later, in Laughlin Nevada. It was hot.

Something I love about Agatha Christie is how she never tread water creatively. I think there’s a misperception that her books use the same formula over and over, but fans know the opposite is true.
It wasn’t just settings or murder methods, she was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunnit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues.
When I made Knives Out, that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc - to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being… and (ta dah) title.
