Special interests have taken notice of our anti-corruption law, #SB1439, & they’re taking it to court.

We gathered our allies to warn about the consequences of this lawsuit & what’s at stake if special interests continue throwing money around in our local politics. 👇🏽
Senator @Steve_Glazer, author of SB 1439, speaking about the urgent need to protect the new law:

“Pay-to-play is antithetical to an honest and ethical government, and it should be rooted out and killed like a cancer that has affected the body politic.”
Jonathan Mehta Stein, Executive Director of California Common Cause, speaking on the importance of expanding current anti-corruption laws:

“SB 1439 is a common sense, narrowly tailored solution to an acute and documented problem. We trust SB 1439 will succeed in the courts.”
Bob Stern, policy expert and principal co-author of the Political Reform Act of 1974, regarding how SB 1439 expands the Political Reform Act:

“It is one of the most significant pieces of legislation in the last 10 years. It gets right to the heart of the corruption problem.”
Sky Allen, Executive Director of Inland Empire United, on how big money in our local politics hurts our communities:

“Increasingly, it’s felt that regardless of how loudly residents and voters push back… developer money will always drown out our voice.”
Ben Powell, Staff Attorney for Consumer Watchdog, on how big money in local politics hurts consumers:

“When corporations and wealthy individuals use their financial resources to influence local elections, they can successfully steer public policy at the expense of consumers.”
Emmanuel Estrada, Mayor of Baldwin Park, on the vast support to remove big money from local politics:

“We enacted a local ordinance barring city contractors from directly donating to candidates and adding stricter contribution limits... Over 80% of our voters reinforced it."

Today, we and @LWVC released a comprehensive evaluation of California’s 2020 statewide redistricting process.

California leads the nation in fair, equitable redistricting – now it's time to take what we learned from 2020 and go even further. 🧵

The report, authored by Prof. @christiangrose, highlights the successes & challenges of California’s 2020 statewide redistricting process & the California Citizens Redistricting Commission.

We offer critical recommendations for strengthening the 2030 redistricting cycle.
We know that using an independent commission, along with the hard work of 14 dedicated commissioners, leads to a fundamentally fair and open process that is driven by and centered on the people.
