yeah this is a thing, there is so much love and support in our community, but there are also people who love to spout venom at elements of a shows writing, acting, production, design, etc, without knowing the first thing about what goes into it. 1/?
Its tough to work on something, to put your heart and soul into it for years only to have someone take a cursory glance at your work, and condemn it as "objectively" bad, because they are so sure of their own assumptions and intelligence as the absolute arbiters of quality - 2/?
As someone who used to let his hot takes fly willy nilly, I now try to do my best to make sure i characterize things not through the lens of whether something "works" full stop, and instead frame it as whether or not it works for me and my sensibilities. 3/?
There are a lot of well made pieces of media that i dont enjoy at all. Movies like "Natural Born Killers" or shows like "My Little Pony" are well made pieces of fiction that accomplish what they set out to do very well. I just dont enjoy it, and thats okay. 4/?
Not everyone has to like HB or HH or Brandons videos or anything else ive ever worked on. I may be your least favorite writer ever, and thats fair, I don't fault anyone for feeling that way, but its always going to hurt to read how shit you are, how talentless you are 5/?
or how the thing you've put sleepless nights into for a year and a half is garbage. I think at a certain point a lot of people stop seeing creators as people, they seem them as something else, something its okay to be cruel to, something worth tearing down. 6/?
And its tough to stomach when at the end of the day, all you want to do is put something out into the world that makes you happy, something you hope makes others happy, something you can be proud of. 7/?
At the end of the day, no piece of media is above critique or analysis, but i would encourage people to make a habit of forming your critiques through the lens of your experience rather than any kind of "objective fact" because all art is subjective by nature 8/?
I would also encourage you to remember that most people are just doing their best to make their dreams a reality, and we're all out here doing our best to make art and stories that matter to us. 9/?
and last, before you hit send, think about how your words would affect you, if it was your passion project they were being said about. like what you want to like, hate what you want to hate, but do your best to be considerate of the work put into the media you watch. 10/?
Nobody is perfect, and sometimes you just let words rip without being considerate, I know i have. but if you care at all about the people on the other side of making the art you consume, just do your best. Thats all, thanks for reading. 11/11
