I wanted to stay out of this but since it’s a needed conversation then here we go
the anime avatar in and of itself isn’t a problem. it’s when Western VTubers pick Japanese names and use what they think are “kawaii Japanese voices/mannerisms” in an effort to APPEAR Japanese
that’s why it is considered a form a digital yellowface. These interpretations of what Japanese people, especially younger Japanese women, are usually based in hyper exaggerated ways of talking and speaking in anime that don’t reflect actual Japanese people IRL
I can see, especially as a mixed Japanese whose heritage has been questioned and denied her entire life (lol the QRTS and comments on That One Post) why a lot of Asian diaspora would be upset to see someone “cosplaying” as being Japanese via an anime avatar
Because this person is literally cosplaying an ethnicity with their avatar, acting like KONNICHIWA MY FANS I’M KAWAII ARINA DESUNYAN YOU CAN CALL ME ARINYAN AS A NICKNAME I’M A NEKO NEKO VTUBER FROM PLANET MAU DESUNYAN and littering their speech with Japanese for appeal/views
I’ve also seen Western VTubers with zero concept of Shinto whatsoever try to have their avatars be “Shinto” inspired but their understanding of the concept of divinity is painfully Western (Christian) and they just… idk slapped a kitsune on it and called it a day
It feels too much like it’s accessorizing Japanese culture for views and to be popular, with zero actual respect for it. It’s fun, they get to act out their fantasy interpretation of what they think a Japanese girl would be like, all while hiding their real ethnicity
So like… I have no problem with VTubers who want to use Japanese culture in their avatars but I have a much bigger problem with people who think “ah yes Inuyasha is a GREAT source material for my Shrine Maiden VTuber avatar” and don’t actually understand Shinto. Stuff like that
This is an area where I strongly encourage VTubers to consult actual Japanese people before creating their avatars. There are English speaking Japanese and mixed Japanese, myself included, available as sensitivity readers. Please consult someone
It’s also not necessary to litter your speech with (bad) Japanese in efforts to sound MECCHA MECCHA KAWAII DESUNYAN like please stop? you don’t need to act Japanese for views/engagement. I’m sure if you have a cute enough personality, it’ll shine on its own
so yeah, you’re welcome to disagree with this but that’s the argument in a nutshell. Take it or leave it.

honestly I can’t believe that stupid drama about me pointing out that in kimono dressing, we eliminate curves and use special padding to make the body as flat as possible and therefore drawing kimono with boobs hanging out is inaccurate… is STILL being quoted. from LAST YEAR
I offended a bunch of artists (like I do with weebs evidently) because I see Western artists draw characters in kimono like they’re drawing bodies with Western clothing where they don’t have such padding to make the body a cylinder shape
People were SO UPSET that I explained as a professional kimono stylist how Not Sexy the kimono actually is when it comes to all those layers
Here’s a fun fact: in JAV they use yukata instead of kimono usually BECAUSE of this
the angry weebs in my replies who can’t handle the fact that most Japanese people aren’t super into anime remind me of the same weebs who try to move to Japan and end up leaving after only 2 or 3 months
they figure out average Japanese people aren’t as otaku as they are and go
back when I worked at bigger eikaiwa chains (think NOVA or Gaba), that was where I met weebs the most
They were always SO excited to be in Japan because it was “JUST LIKE ANIME”
but after 30-60 days in Japan, if they couldn’t accept Japan for what it was, they got so UPSET
Some of these weebs actually end up going back to their home countries and find that they enjoy anime subculture things with other weebs WAY more than they ever did in Japan with Japanese people
I do actually like Polish food! I REALLY miss Żurek, and even the simple, hearty dishes were fantastic. Polish bread is amazing and ofc I miss getting cheap pączki
(And yes it’s not technically Polish but my god I miss kebab! Amrit Kebab was my fave in Warsaw)
I really enjoyed learning about Poland while I was there, especially more traditional Polish culture. Polish poetry is gorgeous, especially Adam Mickiewicz (I know, I know, typical answer, but I love his stuff!) and I honestly wish I could have learned more Polish language
honestly if we are going to discuss real problems Japan has with sexual assault let’s start with the fact that there must be “undeniable” PROOF the victim was physically unable to resist here
so many victims haven’t seen justice because of this
in 2019 there was an infamous case that even though the court recognized it wasn’t consensual, without proof the victim truly couldn’t physically resist, the entire case got thrown. zero justice.
so basically, even if someone had been groomed or guilted, that line is SO blurry thanks to the justice ministry’s inability to step up and redefine rape as ALL non-consensual sexual assault, a case can be tossed just because of that lack of proof of physical resistance
people keep repeating this BS as if it’s actually legal in Japan for a 13 year old to sleep with someone 18+. no. no it is not.
anyone who sleeps with someone aged 13 to 15 will be charged with statutory rape if the perpetrator is five or more years older
is 13 too young regardless, even if it’s a 13 year old sleeping with someone the same age? Yes, I think so personally, and there is talk of raising the age to 16 now.
people in anglospheres often say things like "Twitter doesn't reflect real life"
but tbh when it comes to Japan, a lot of people are uncomfortable saying their real feelings IRL. they don't like discourse.
online anonymously with a fake name and an avatar is a different story
this isn't to say that everyone in Japan is secretly YEARNING to have discourse; some people genuinely don't think about life that seriously. that's true everywhere.
but there will be opinions you'll read online that people won't tell you to your face, EVEN IF you ask
this contrasts a lot with the other places I've lived where people usually debate easier IRL. ofc, some politeness remains (usually? I hope?)
but honestly it can be very hard to get people's real opinions unless you know them for a LONG time. I'm talking YEARS
