financial and business journalists are really the elite of the profession: clearly explained things from the beginning, provided commentary that dispelled the histrionics, assumed readers were smart enough to understand things
a lot of the nasty things people say about the press is deserved, but the people who work at FT, Bloomberg, etc. do a really good job and provide a real service no matter what your politics are

I don't really understand this argument at all: differences of context notwithstanding, the popular front era coincided with some of the most major and lasting successes of the left in France and the United States
where one could even argue that fascism was not as "live" a threat. Moreover, the comintern decision to pursue united front and popular front strategy was brought upon by the disastrous failure of their previous line, which was that everyone else was a "social fascist"
In France, antifascism, brought on by the crisis of Feb 6 1934, allowed the SFIO to present itself to the public as the leader of a democratic resistance to the threat of fascism, it wedded socialism to the project of the democratic republic
