My last tweet with the image of a “village square” has drawn much more attention than I could expect. That’s great. Unfortunately, there’s no way I can possible reply to every comment, so here is instead a thread with my comments on your comments:
0. The Village Generator (watabou.github.io/village.html) generates maps of medieval-ish fantasy villages. I am going to reference this fact further :)
1. Do such villages need squares at all, would this be historically accurate? Not really. “Villages greens” would be more appropriate, and they would look differently. But I think an occasional square can make a “fantasy” village map look more interesting.
2. It’s not a square there, it’s a circle! Right. If anyone knows the word for a non-square town square, please let me know. Proper names (e.g. Piccadilly Circus) don’t count. But yeah, rectangular village squares are on my list.
3. A square needs a centrepiece. I totally agree. I’m planning to place a well in the centre or maybe a large tree or a small monument. A fountain would be an unbelievable luxury for a medieval village.
4. There shouldn’t be trees in the square. I tend to agree (unless it’s a single large tree as in 3). But until I implemented any other content for squares, trees will stay to fill that flat emptiness.
5. Buildings should enclose the square more tightly. I don’t agree. It’s not a town and in a village there is absolutely no point in building houses like they are competing for exposure.
*. These are the most frequent questions/suggestions/critique. The image in the previous tweet and the one in the first tweet of these thread are just early tests. Your feedback is very welcome!
