Why did this episode of #TheMandalorian have Din and Bo for a small bit and then Dr Pershing on Coruscant? I think some may have missed the thematic connections in The Convert.
Both storylines involve being welcomed into a new society, not by choice, but by necessity. 1/8
Dr Pershing isn't very invested in the Republic vs Empire dispute. He is interested in his science, shows an interest in doing what is right, but only when he can do so with minimal risk to himself. He's a coward and a bit selfish. His motivations were set early in life. 2/8
Bo Katan also isn't very invested in galactic struggles. She cares about Mandalore. She will do what is right sometimes, but is often focused more on Mandalore and her self. Her motivations were ALSO set early in life.
They're both broken by having lost their life's purpose. 3/8
Both belonged to an old power that has been essentially destroyed, and are welcomed in this episode into a power from even before the old power. The Republic, and the death watch cult mimicking the ancient Mandalorians. 4/8
Both are unpleased with irrational dogma of their new societies. Pershing it's the disinterest in using his valuable science. Bo it is the dogmatic following of ancient rites. They're also both welcomed officially, but not completely trusted. 5/8
The main difference is that Pershing has no ally in the new society. His only friend betrays him.
This could foreshadow a, at least perceived, betrayal by Din. However, I don't think so. I think the difference is she has a true friend, who she can talk to about her feelings. 6/8
One thing I noticed with Dr Pershing was that he has no one to talk to, and he tries. His supervisor, his robot therapist, his fellow converts, it's all surface level. He sees the many flaws of the new republic, but is isolated within it. 7/8
Bo can speak to Din.
My prediction based on this episode is that Din will agree with some of the criticism of Death Watch, maybe not right away however. Bo confiding in him will get him out.
(Side note, I'm excited to hopefully see more of the death watch society).
Anyway, it was a great EP! 8/8
