Designing a token?

Seed Club's @joshcrnls shares why you should pay attention to the ...

"Meme <> Utility Spectrum"

a thread👇
Cultural and consumer projects launch tokens to:

- attract early believers
- encourage collective experiences
- store the value of their shared belief and excitement.

For this to work, tokens need to be imbued with meaning.
This meaning comes from two fundamental places, Utility and Meme.

1. utility

- access,
- benefits,
- services

2. meme

- status,
- association,
- belief,
- provenance,
- memory
The Utility-Meme Spectrum recognizes that these two pillars of meaning are competing with each other for attention.
The more defined utility an object has the less effective it is at capturing belief in the underlying meme

and

the better an object captures the mimetic value of a project the less effective it is as a utility.
In the latest on the @seedclubhq blog Josh shares

1. examples (@nounsdao vs @cryptopunksnfts )
2. argues why early stage projects must lean into the meme side of the spectrum

Community tokens make sense.

A (short) thread. 👇
A community is valuable because of its members, their interaction and the good they co-create.

Belonging, access to a network, to insight and to new possibilities are all valuable.
But most of that value is intangible, and hard to $ value and to monetize.

Traditionally this has meant organizers are under resourced (volunteer driven community events), or access to communities becomes very expensive. (influencer driven masterminds)
