I joined France's largest video-game forum (still is) to discuss games but I was more or less pushed to discuss Islam.

Ofc I was always into Islam (you don't choose "asalamalekoum" as login at 12 otherwise lol) but the geopolitics "helped" me in a way.
Also glad that I grew up in the age of forums (long posts, push you to write more & "more intellectually") & not social media (shorter texts).
Iraq War polarized everyone, even more so than 9/11, I guess because there was the whole nuke angle, the persona of Saddam (he was seen as the dictator per excellence in France), the fact that the insurgency was getting stronger, etc so you had tons of anti Islam posts.
All of this pushed me to learn more : I was from an immigrant background with no real tradition of intellectualism so I decided to read everything I could, in history, philosophy, theology, ... to own them in their own games.
At the beginning even reading a 200 p. book seemed impossible.
Over time I adapted & found both writing & reading easier.
It shows that it depends on your niyyah (intention), if it's about defending Islam Allah SWT will open those doors you didn't even expect to ever knock on.
There's some khayr in every situation & even a child is born in pain, I'm in a way grateful not for the Iraq War itself (obviously) but that I somehow "grabbed the opportunity", so to speak, and evolved.
Many took this rope ("iSlAm bAd") not to rescue but to hang themselves.

Shumei Okawa [1886-1957] was one of the main figures of the Japanese RW in the 20th century, a philosopher with an interest in Eastern religions and also in Islam (translated the Qur'an).
An aspect he liked: no separation between religion/politics.

Also one of the very very few to switch his love of "mystical Islam" to "militant Islam", also great words for the prophet ﷺ :

In 1913, while comparing Muslims with Confucians & Buddhists in China, he said :
"Muslims can therefore be considered as the most powerful religious community in contemporary China."
I was on team Kira just for the rarity of having an anti-hero as lead, but there’s much to dig symbolically, for instance the death scene at the end with Kira lying down on the stairs between light and darkness (no real issue for his soul that he basically "sold").
…L washing the feet of Kira, it’s reminiscent of the Biblical episode where Jesus does it with with his disciples, including Judas…
The historical "non-existence" or "non-importance" of Mecca, that was once popular with Orientalists (mostly thanks to Patricia Crone), has been debunked by Orientalists themselves.
Let's read Mikhail Bukharin's chapter in "The Qurʼān in Context" (ed. Neuwirth, 2009) :
He begins by quoting R. B. Serjeant, who also refutes Crone & concludes :
"The data to be reviewed below strongly
suggests that the caravan trade routes functioned throughout the entire pre-Islamic period, that they passed through the territory around today’s Mecca [...]"
