The worst tornado in American history slammed Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. Dubbed the "Tri-State Tornado", the estimated F5 had a path length of over 215 miles, was on the ground for ~3.5 hours, and had an estimated forward speed over over 60 mph.
695 people were killed, making this event the deadliest tornado to ever strike the US. 33 fatalities occurred in a single school at De Soto, Illinois. Over 2000 injuries were reported.
Numerous towns along the path were devastated, with some losing ≥90% of their structures.
The Tri-State tornado was part of a larger outbreak of (at least) nine tornadoes
An estimated F4 that struck northern TN/southern KY swept away homes, shredded trees, and killed 41 people. Another massive F4 killed 4 people and leveled entire farms south of Elizabeth, Indiana
