Love #methodologymonday plz keep them coming! With factorial designs, there are competing schools of thought, particularly around the assumption that the treatments do not interact. My understanding is that when effect coding (-1,+1) is used, this assumption does not apply [1/?]
Effect coding allows you to interpret all main effects and interactions independently of one another, making the factorial design very efficient for building complex interventions where we may anticipate interactions.
And here is an example of our own work where we are making use of the factorial design to optimise a complex intervention involving potentially 4 components: bmjopen.bmj.com/content/13/2/e…
@RebeccaWalwyn is also very interested in such designs, and the dilemma of effect vs. dummy coding. For those interested, we're planning an online CPD course on these topics (and more) to be piloted in 2023 and opened more widely in 2024. Stay in touch!
