When Judge Werner asked potential jury members if a trial of that length would cause "undue or extreme hardship", more than half raised their hands.
Work schedules, school, planned vacations, and dependents are the most common reasons why potential jury members say they would experience "undue or extreme hardship" if they had to serve as a jury member. @KRDONC13
Prior to the first potential jury members walking into the courtroom, Letecia Stauch was smiling as she was speaking with one of her defense attorneys.
Since they came in, Stauch has been looking away from all of the potential jurors. Covering her face with her hair. @KRDONC13
One of the potential jurors was immediately dismissed by Judge Werner to a gale of laughter from the fellow potential jurors when he revealed that he works for District Attorney and lead prosecutor Michael Allen. #leteciastauch
Judge Werner asked about reasons of disqualification:
-Related to #leteciastauch? - No hands.
-Legal relationships with the defendant? - No hands.
-Lawsuit with the defendant? - No hands.
-Witness in the case? - No hands.
-Financial interest in the case? - No hands.
Do they have bias towards #leteciastauch or prosecution? - Several potential jurors raised their hands. @KRDONC13
Reasons for potential bias:
-Past news media coverage of the #leteciastauch case.
-Strong opinions when it comes to crimes against children.
-Family member is in prison for child abuse.
Judge asked jury pool if they could set aside bias. Most said they could, not all.
39 potential jurors were just dismissed by Judge Werner. In total, 40 jurors have been dismissed so far. #leteciastauch
Judge Werner is providing the remaining jurors (a few dozen) a list of potential witnesses that could be called during the #leteciastauch trial.
Asking if they know anyone on the list.
Several said they knew people on the witness list:
One juror says they knew an investigator on a personal level.
Another knows a Forensic nurse at memorial central.
A third previously worked with one of the detectives wife.
.@4thJudicialDA Michael Allen is now detailing a brief description of their case against #LeteciaStauch to the remaining jurors.
Allen provided details as to how 11-year old Gannon died: stab wounds, gunshot wounds, remains driven across the country and dumped off the side of a bridge.
The defense gave a brief speech as well, stating there is no reasonable explanation for why #LeteciaStauch would’ve done this.
Calling her a "loving stepmom to Gannon."
Judge Werner:
Can you hold the prosecution to their burden of proof?
Did #LeteciaStauch kill #GannonStauch beyond a reasonable doubt?
Was Letecia Stauch sane beyond a reasonable doubt at the time of Gannon’s killing?
Three more were just dismissed by judge Werner. So far, 43 potential jurors have been let go. #LeteciaStauch
By midday, more than half of the potential jurors have been let go at this point for the first jury pool for the #leteciastauch trial.
Judge Werner just broke for lunch. Selection resumes at 1:15 pm. Prosecutors will start asking potential jurors questions.
Lunch is over. Court is back in session. Jury selection resumes. #LeteciaStauch
.@4thJudicialDA Michael Allen speaking to the potential jurors, asking questions about how jurors interpret bias. Allen says he is looking for a good juror for this case in particular. #LeteciaStauch
Allen asked potential jurors if they can put media information they've previously consumed on this case to the side.
Several potential jurors said they could. One said they are already trying to wipe their mind clean of past news surrounding this case. #LeteciaStauch
While speaking to potential jurors, DA Allen was about to compare Stauch to the Aurora mass shooter case. Defense immediately objected to that characterization.
After a brief discussion with Judge Werner, Allen moved off from discussing the Aurora shooter. #LeteciaStauch
Allen is now talking with the potential jurors about motive, and how in CO proving motive isn't required to obtain a conviction.
Multiple potential jurors said that's not inconceivable. #LeteciaStauch
Prosecution is done. #LeteciaStauch defense counsel is now asking questions of potential jurors.
Defense starts asking about potential hardships if they were to serve on the #LeteciaStauch jury.
Defense attorney doesn't want jurors to experience potential hardships serving on a jury. But his 'only obligation is to that woman right there' - as he points to Letecia.
Potential juror told defense she is from Fountain and a part of the Facebook group, 'Find Gannon.'
Remembers keeping an eye out for Gannon back in early 2020 before his remains were found in FL.
Potential juror said “we were all looking for the kiddo.”
Defense discussing the brutal evidence in this case, can potential jurors handle observing autopsy photos of a decomposing 11-year old child? #LeteciaStauch
Defense asks potential jurors, is guilty by reason of insanity a 'BS' excsuse?
Multiple jurors agree that insanity is used as an excuse for their actions.
#LeteciaStauch pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity for Gannon Stauch's murder.
20 potential jurors asked to stay by Judge Gregory Werner, 12 more dismissed. #LeteciaStauch
Judge Werner's order to 20 potential jurors:
-Can tell family they may be on the jury for #LeteciaStauch.
-Can ask for family for help in avoiding news about the case.
-Do not discuss case details with anyone.
-Do not listen to anyone’s opinions on the case.
Judge says they are hoping to reach a group of 110 potential jurors before the next step in the selection process.
The plan is they come together on April 3rd to pick final 18 (12 jurors and 6 alternates).
It is possible they will not have projected jurors by April 3.

In less than 20 minutes, jury selection for the Letecia Stauch murder trial is set to get underway. The El Paso Co. woman is accused of killing her 11-month old step-son Gannon Stauch. I will be inside the courtroom as the selection process commences. @KRDONC13
During a pre-trial hearing in February, Judge Gregory Werner said the jury selection process may start on March 20, but it likely won't be until April 3 when the state starts calling witnesses. @KRDONC13
A quick recap of events since Gannon went missing back in January of 2020:
